The Crimson Cryptogram by Fergus Hume (1859 - 1932).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-crimson-cryptogram-by-fergus-hume/
Young Dr Ellis, a struggling new physician, is enjoying a quiet evening smoking and enjoying conversation with his journalist friend Cass, when their mysterious neighbour, Mrs Moxton, bursts in upon them with startling news - her husband has been murdered! Rushing to the scene, the two men discover Mr Moxton, stabbed in the back. They investigate the body thoroughly, but find no real clues to his assailant except for a mysterious series of markings, scrawled in blood on the dead man's sleeve. ( Don W. Jenkins)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55309
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Gee, only four chapters in, and we have a body, a love interest, a riddle to be solved, and a protagonist who isn't seeing straight due to love. The duo of Bob and Harry. My money is on Harry.

Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 are PL OKAY. :!:

Cass thinks that he's Sherlock Holmes and has it all figured out. Our good doctor (Watson haha) is seeing through the rose colored haze of infatuation.

Who knows what lurks ahead.

There has to be some significance to there being a sister, but just by the principle of elimination of the obvious suspect, I doubt it is either of them. You know, these days, Schwartz and Garrett would immediately be labeled as two old gay guys. Anyway, Ellis' head just gets fluffier with love, and Harry leads the way with willingness to suspect everyone.

I had cataract surgery when I was 18, and I had to lay very still for some days, and there were further procedures and lots of glasses and contacts in the years since. My wife had cataract surgery a couple of years ago, and she was in and out in a couple of hours and had lens implants that allowed her to see the next day. Now she doesn't even need reading glasses because she had the reading power implanted in one eye, and distance in the other. I was born with cataracts, and now babies who have them go home all fixed from the get.

Sections 5, 6, 7 and 8 are PL OKAY. :!: :!:

Ellis and Harry do well working together. They dug up suspects quickly enough. You never know about the sisters at this point. It's early days but I think they know something incriminating.

Haha the two old gay guys is about right. My uncle Chester met his partner in high school. Spent their life together running the family farm. Chet got cancer in his 70's and his partner died seven months after.

I didn't understand that they were a couple until my teens. They loved me and I spent a couple summers with them on the farm when I was in grade school. I vividly remember being lost in the apple orchard and crying until they found me. Chet swung me up on his shoulder and hauled me to the house. We had a treat of cider and cookies.

My step sister has had eye surgery twice. Not fun. Her eyes were so crossed that she couldn't see. Made her young life difficult.

Deception and denial all around! The more things are clarified, the murkier they are. I sure hope Hume has all the loose ends in hand, because there are a lot of people who stood to profit from this murder. If I go by my old rule of thumb that the least likely person is the villain, then my money is on Dr. Ellis. His motive was love, and he needed the husband out of the way. I think Mrs. Moxton better be careful of him. (Joking, of course.)

Sorry it was a while. My wife is out of school, and often has ideas about how I can use my time. Plus, she is probably, most likely, going to retire now, so we have been making trips to Las Vegas to look at houses to buy. We need to find a one-story home, due to the effect of aging on the knees, but prices here in paradise are pretty high now. Much better in the Las Vegas valley, and we have a son and his wife who own a condo there.

Mrs. Moxton keeps digging her hole deeper and deeper. You can't believe half of what she says. The in love doctor is willing to believe anything she says.

Happy to hear that your wife is retiring too  Teachers are hard working and sacrifice so much.

I couldn't stand the heat in Nevada. But since you have family in the area, I can understand why. It's been in the 80-90 degrees here and I hide until the sun goes down and it cools off. Yuck. Even then the humidity is horrid.

Good luck with the house hunting. Hope you find just what you need.

I figured something like that, but I had decided that there was really only one sister who was playing both roles. How do we know they are not putting one over on Ellis now? Probably wasn't the lawyer. Probably wasn't Zirknitz. I know, Zirknitz Sr. isn't really dead and has set up this whole scam to get more gambling money for Jr. and Sr. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

You hit on the big difference, right there--the humidity. Here in San Diego it is somewhat humid due to the ocean, and it feels terrible at 85-90 degrees. In Las Vegas you are truly in the desert, and it is dry as a bone. So we were going out to do things in triple digit heat and not thinking much about it. We went one evening to see the Neon Museum, and the tour was outdoors, and at 10:00 PM the temperature was still 102, but it was not bad. Also, the heat and dryness make it so our old people joints don't hurt.

Well, well it turns out that the good doctor is shrewd after all. Making a copy of that will but not mentioning it until he knew his lady love was innocent. Happy to hear that the strong but elusive one was not the widow and had good reasons for secrets.

Boy, I am glad that I've never lived in a boarding house. Those nosey women know everything about everyone. It's a lot like that in my small town too. 1500 people who know what you do and when. Good thing I don't do much that is worth talking about.

Et Fin!
I had to find out whodunnit, so I did the rest. I'm not going to do any spoilers, though, so you'll have to listen and be surprised. I do have to say that this ended like some of Sherlock Holmes' cases, and you will probably see what I mean.

On to another Fergus Hume, I think.
