So the Dutch admiral sailed with a broom at his masthead - to show his intention of sweeping the seas. I'd come across that broom at the masthead of a ship elsewhere but had no idea of its significance.

Me, neither, but I remember it.

And the mind of Louis XIV was the diametrical opposite of anything as direct as a Dutch broom at the masthead!

I've made it PL OK, Pam. But you might like to look at an uncharacteristic trip of the tongue at 4:02.40 where you read "British" for "bishop".
