Loss of the Sultana by Chester D. Berry (1844 - 1926).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/loss-of-the-sultana-by-chester-d-berry/
April, 1865. The country was in turmoil. The U.S. Civil War had come to an end, thousands of Union prisoners of war had recently been released, and President Lincoln had just been assassinated. The steamship 'Sultana' left New Orleans on April 21st, traveled to Vicksburg, Mississippi where it took on 1,965 federal soldiers and 35 officers, all recently released prisoners of war, most of them held at the prison camps of Cahaba (or Cahawba, near Selma, Alabama) and Andersonville (in southwest Georgia), and now finally headed for their homes.

The 'Sultana' arrived in Memphis, Tennessee on April 26th and headed north toward Cairo, Illinois carrying over 2,100 passengers, but designed for a capacity of only 376. At approximately 2:00 a.m. of the 27th, mere hours after the assassination of John Wilkes Booth, the 'Sultana' mysteriously exploded while steaming about 7 miles north of Memphis, killing over 1,500 on board (estimates vary). The sole reason this incident received such scant attention at the time, and ever since, is the fact that the country was understandably absorbed in the recent assassinations. Subsequent inquiry into the 'Sultana' disaster would uncover some startling revelations into its cause, some believe leading directly to the topmost levels of the U.S. Government. The loss of the 'Sultana' was the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history, up until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This book, composed by Chester Berry, one of the survivors, is unique in that it gives firsthand account from well over 100 of the survivors of the tragedy in their own words.

Note - The online e-text (link provided) includes 3 lists for reference, however are not included in this audio release:
1 - An official list of prisoners of war on the Sultana, including company served with
2 - Persons known to have been on board the Sultana, but not reported
3 - Name, Company, Regiment, and present (1892) residence of living survivors ( Roger Melin)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Note, this is an enormous project, I understand that. I would like to keep it as a single entity, if possible and if allowed.

It will be perfectly understandable if any DPL that might sign up chooses to withdraw at any time. Just inform myself and the MC.
The stories and mini-bios should be told, it's a fascinating read.

I believe I have sectioned out the book pretty accurately - that's right, 140 sections. Some are a bit lengthy, some are shorter.
There is a long list of names, regiments, etc. at the end of the book. I have chosen to include these, but if it is determined that omitting them might be in the best interest,
it would shorten the project by about 8-10 sections, and I'd be glad to do so.

Always open to suggestions and/or opinions. :D

Thanks. Hopefully 140 sections will stand firm, but I can't guarantee it at this point. This will take me a while.
I also was blown away when I first heard about this, and was delighted to find the Chester Berry book available. Had to read it.

I believe the maximum number of sections allowed is 156, so... On the other hand it is very easy to delete sections should you later decide that you don't need 153.

EDIT: I checked and the limit is actually 256 sections (imposed on us by the folks at Archive.org).

OK, thanks for checking. If anything, I think the number of sections will be fewer rather than more. I'm now considering omitting the lists at the end of the book.
Is it permissible to do that? Meaning, this would render the book in its entirety basically 'incomplete'.

Readers will sometimes omit lists, appendices and other sections that are not part of the main text. In the book description you could mention that such items are available in the e-text (which the listener can download using the provided link).

I think that is what I will do. This would cut down the number of sections to 143. I will add to the book description soon, and I will update this post when that has been completed.
Thanks again!

EDIT: OK, I've managed to pare it down to 140 sections. Stay tuned .....

The summary has been updated.
At this point, I think I will stick with 140 sections total.
Thanks.

As you can see I've deleted the extra sections. You or I can add sections if they are later needed. I would probably record the sections in the order they are in the book just in case you decide to split a long section into two sections. I will update the book summary that will be used when the book is cataloged. Only the MW information migrates during cataloging. Should you decide to make further changes just let me know. One down and just a few to go!

Moving this book to the "Going Solo" forum to keep the "Launch Pad" forum tidy.
