Childe Harold's Pilgrimage by George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788 - 1824).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/childe-harolds-pilgrimage-by-george-gordon-lord-byron/
Childe Harold's Pilgrimage is a lengthy narrative poem in four parts written by Lord Byron. It was published between 1812 and 1818 and is dedicated to "Ianthe". The poem describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who, disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry, looks for distraction in foreign lands. In a wider sense, it is an expression of the melancholy and disillusionment felt by a generation weary of the wars of the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. The title comes from the term childe, a medieval title for a young man who was a candidate for knighthood. ( Wikipedia)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Glad to see someone recording this as it is a great favourite of mine. I started a recording of it some time ago but only managed to complete Canto 4.
I see you already have a DPL but if you need any other assistance please let me know.

Section 00 is PL OK.

No worries about 01. And I don't blame you about the Browning! I'm looking forward to hearing you, but it's a bit of a monster. I'm still wrestling with mine, so I can only guess how you're doing.
I'll listen to your other sections later.

Hi Peter,

I have two numerical notes for section 1 and four for pronunciation. I don't know how stringent you want me to be, so I'll write them for this section and leave it up to you if you want them for future sections or which to change these. I think these would be noted off LV, but none of them altered the meaning.

2.35, start of stanza VI:
VI [heard VII]

11.55-11.58, stanza XIX:
The tender azure of the unruffled deep,
Check pronunciation of azure:

22.12, start of stanza XLI:
XLI [heard LI]

24.50-24.54, stanza XLVI:
Nor here War's clarion, but Love's rebeck sounds;
Check pronunciation of rebeck:
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/rebec

34.15-34.18, stanza LXV:
A cherub-hydra round us dost thou gape,
Check pronunciation of cherub:

36.30-36.33, stanza LXX:
And many to the steep of Highgate hie.
Check pronunciation of Highgate:

Section 1 is spot PL OK.

Those websites are excellent resources, but they rather imply that there is a single (southern English) acceptable pronunciation. I'll keep posting them if required, but do say if anything goes against the grain. It would be a shame to override a variant pronunciation just because some website had something different.

Just an update. I have had a bit of health trouble just lately and have been unable to add any sections. Soon I will have to be out of town for a week also. I will get back into this project in a couple of weeks. Will definitely finish it!
