The Jack-Knife Man by Ellis Parker Butler (1869 - 1937).
A lighthearted tale which revolves around old Peter Lane, who lives in a houseboat on the Mississippi River and mostly whiles away his time whittling with his jack-knife and not really doing much else. That is, until one night, a sickly woman knocks at his boat door holding her son in her arms. This encounter would change Peter's life, as the old man befriends little Buddy and is determined to keep him and raise him as his own, provided he is able to keep a host of others from laying claim to the orphan.

(Note - While the online text for this book appears that there is no chapter 7, no chapters have been omitted from this recording.) (Roger Melin)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/44150
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

And there it is! I'll leave us in the Launch Pad for a day or so for people to see what's coming along and to hopefully attract a proof-listener.

Excellent! Thanks Bev, it's always a pleasure to work with you.

Just in case you (or anyone else) is curious why there are only 19 sections, while the Gutenberg text shows 20 chapters, for some reason chapter 7 is skipped, in both the TOC and the text.
So as I'm recording, my chapter numbers won't jibe with what the book shows. (Like, when the book shows "Chapter 10", I'll be saying "Chapter 9". IF I remember, that is.)
I might need to ask the PL to make sure I comply with my own directive. :help:

I hadn't looked that closely at the PG text yet but yes, I would have wondered.

You might want to make a note at the end of your summary to explain why your voiced Chapter numbers don't exactly line up with the text, for those listeners that follow along with the text.

Another thought: you could say "Section #" instead of Chapter # in your audio and just use the title text without numbers in the MW title field. Then listeners will know that they are getting each section without missing any and you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing.

Both great ideas. As I searched other online texts (scans), they all show only 19 chapters, with the same chapter titles as the PG scan.
I can only suspect that PG inserted their own TOC for some reason? (The typeface appears different).

So, I will use the term "chapter", and as you suggested, will add a note to the summary. Good idea!

Thank you, and welcome aboard Helen!

Probably a couple of days before the first chapter is posted.
Just an FYI - I tend toward about two chapters per week, sometimes more often, sometimes less.
The book looks interesting, although I haven't read it all the way through yet.

:hmm: I can't access the text from the above link.
Even when I PL standard, I follow along with the text.
