Dinosaurs - With Special Reference to the American Museum Collections by William Matthew (1871 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/dinosaurs-by-william-diller-matthew/
America has had a fascination with dinosaurs, particularly since the wild enthusiasm of Jurassic Park and its sequels. The term "dinosaur" was coined in 1841 by the Victorian scientist Sir Richard Owen. By the end of the 19th century, geologists and paleontologists had described fossil skeletons of many groups, and museums competed for the best dinosaur fossils. In this 1915 book, famed paleontologist William Diller Matthew describes fossils from the American museum collections, including the carnivores such as Tyrannosaurus rex, the amphibious plant eaters such as Brontosaurus, and the horned dinosaurs such as Triceratops. A perfect primer for those who are intrigued by the giants that ruled the earth before mammals. ( Jeffery Smith)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I can see that the title of the book needs to be shortened to just "Dinosaurs". After all, "On the Origin of Species" is actually "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" but that is overkill in the 21st century.

I was in process of setting this up when you posted. :)

I think it's OK to leave the full title in the database entry. What you could do is read the full title in the intro for the first section and for the last "end of book" outro, but just use "Dinosaurs" for the intros for sections 1-11. What do you think?

And it looks like the author is best known with his middle name, so perhaps it'd be best to say "William Diller Matthew" as the author in the intros.

Jeffery - you'll want to change the very last column in the Magic window from "Assigned" to "ready for PL". This will put the section in your DPL's list of "to do" sections. ;)

1 PL OK.

Did you mean to say Chapter 1 in the above post? In the audio file you say Chapter 1.
