The Sinking of the "Merrimac" by Richmond Pearson Hobson (1870 - 1937).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-sinking-of-the-merrimac-by-richmond-pearson-hobson/
During the Spanish-American War, Naval Constructor Hobson U.S.N. devised a plan to scuttle a ship in the channel leading to Santiago harbor in Cuba and thus bottle up the Spanish fleet at anchor in the bay. This book contains Hobson's personal narrative of how the scheme was carried out and of what happened afterward. ( Delmar H. Dolbier)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/adh2561.0001.001.umich.edu
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thank you.

A few concerns:

1. This book is divided into "Parts" instead of "Chapters." Each Part needs to be subdivided for recording. I don't know what word to use in the intro and outro; the best I can think of is "Part One, The Scheme and the Preparations, Section One." Suggestions?

2. There are a number of references in the text to accompanying illustrations. I propose to omit these references wherever possible.

3. Is it best practice to read a footnote at the point where it occurs in the text? For example, "...the major came in. Footnote. This was the major...of the hospital. End footnote. Mr. Ramsden made a reference..." [p. 256]

4. Each Part begins with a long list of the topics it contains. Is it a good idea to omit those lists?

That sounds good, I can't think of a better way to do it.

That makes sense.

Yes, that is the way to do it if you feel the footnotes are important. Like illustrations, footnotes are frequently skipped.

These are longer lists than I have seen in other projects, but they should be included. You could break them up with each Part/Section you are reading. If the lists still seem long, you could break each part into smaller pieces and add more sections to the MW.

Part One, The Scheme and the Preparations, Section One containing A suggestion from San Juan - "Unsinkables" from Havana - Admiral Sampson announces his purpose - The plan of feigning a chase; why discarded; The plan of stealing in adopted - Two methods of sinking the collier- The torpedoes - Arrangement of the torepedoes - The firing of the torpedoes - Other details.

Part One, The Scheme and the Preparations, Section Two containing Arrival at Santiago and reconnoitering - Inspecting the Merrimac - Hundreds of volunteers, Chaos on the Merrimac - Trouble with anchors and chains - Final preparations under difficulties - The Merrimac's flag - Trial trip and inspection - The first attempt: off at last - The recall and postponement.

A minor quibble...The first 50s have a lower volume than the rest of the rest (about 5dB lower). By highlighting that section one could amplify just the first 50s. I would use my ear to decide by how much. Otherwise the file is pl ok.
