Personal Narrative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of America During the Years 1799-1804, Volume 3 by Alexander von Humboldt (1769 - 1859) and others. Translated by Thomasina Ross ( - 0)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/personal-narrative-of-travels1799-1804-3-by-alexander-von-humboldt/

Volume 3, the final volume of the “Personal Narrative”, records the travels of Alexander von Humboldt and the botanist Aimé Bonpland in South and Central America, and the Caribbean. In this volume, they start at Angostura, the capital at that time of Spanish Guiana, where both required recuperation from serious febrile disease contracted on their journey on the Orinoco. Once well, they recommenced their travels, returning across Spanish Guiana and Venezuela to the coastal settlement of Nueva Barcelona, from whence they departed for Cuba and further travels in the Caribbean. As in the previous volumes, von Humboldt describes their travel with a narrative that is expressively descriptive of people, plants, animals and geology. Volume 3 also discusses slavery in Cuba and provides a geological description of South America north of the Amazon and east of the northern region of the Andes. (summary by Gail Timmerman-Vaughan)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/7254
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi --

Here is Section 02.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_02_humboldt.mp3
21 min 38 sec, 89.5 dB.

AvH makes a comment about the locals observing that the flood is higher about every 5 years - but seems not to believe it. My interpretation is that it is perhaps a very early European report of an effect of the Southern Oscillation.....

Cheers

Hi -

Here is Section 3.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_03_humboldt.mp3

88.6 dB, 26 min 02 sec.

It could be a while before I manage the next recording. I have my annual bout of laryngitis..... I had recorded Section 3 before getting sick.

Let me know if anything needs to be fixed, please.

Cheers

Hi --

It's been a while.

Section 4 is ready to be DPLed. Both this section and the next are pretty hard reading - hopefully the listening is easier (I think it would put me to sleep!) - a lot of tongue twisting place names, and the subject is the erroneous historical maps. And, poor old AvH complains of having been mis-attributed!

I also wonder if the translator was getting a bit tired, or if her sentence structure was being badly influenced by her immersion in the French, because many sentences are very awkward.

My voice sounds a bit forced in places in this reading - I hope it is OK - but don't hesitate to let me know if it would be best if I were to rerecord this Section.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_04_humboldt.mp3
27 min 43.8 sec, 87.2 dB.

Many thanks

Thanks for that. Not a good thing -- but it should be right now. Let me know if it isn't.

Are the other ones OK? I can save them again with the proper specs if they aren't.

How do you check the bitrate?

Cheers

Sections 1-3 are also not 128kbps. I should have noticed sooner.

Thanks for checking that. New computer..... too many check boxes..... but I shouldn't make excuses.

Anyway, Sections 1 - 3 are now saved at 128 kbps.
