Nobody's Man by E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866 - 1946).

This project is now complete. All files can be found on the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/nobodys-man-by-e-phillips-oppenheim/

Brigadier general Andrew Tallente, late of Parliament, is implicated in the death of his male secretary, the son of a classmate at Eton. Seems the younger man may have not only been having an affair with the hero's American wife, but had stolen incriminating political documents. A political coup of sorts develops as the opposing party invites Tallente to lead them. Enter the lovely heiress-next-door, who becomes the hero's champion, and perhaps, new flame. ( Matt Pierard)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17356
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

13-15 uploaded.

Note, the book is broken into two sections, "Book 1" ending with chapter 14, then "Book 2" beginning with a Chapter 1; I'm doing this in successive numerical order. In this case, Ch 1 is now Ch 15, and so on. I'm guessing that there are more than 22 chapters, since PG didn't bother to provide a chapter listing, so I've added a few more to the MW. There are also a lot of typos in the txt version I use. I'm going to download a vintage PDF of the first edition, if I can find one, from Archive.

Oppenheim had to have influenced Graham Greene and Ian Fleming. 8-)

Chapters 1-3 are PL OK!

Chapter 4 has a repeat @ 03:25 "Mr. Tallente, sir..."

ETA: You're the fastest person to record 36 chapters that I've ever PL'ed for!

Thanks for the PL'ing. It was the quality of the writing that made me do it, a real page-turner.

Also, Ava, the subject matter is more about politics than crime, which is kept way on the back-burner.

(just realized those two sentences rhyme)

So you want to change the genres on this one? (and maybe write a more specific summary?)
Cheers, Ava.
