No, I do not know Dalymple. I wonder if he wrote anything short, as "engaging and enthusiastic" histories make good audiobooks.

My best,

Pam
His early books are short. The later ones very expansive. I loved "From the Holy Mountain" - an account of his young wanderings around the Eastern Med.

What a challenging section! PL OK. During the campaign against Tippo Sultan I keep thinking of "Dover Beach":

"Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight
Where ignorant armies clash by night".

Yeah, a Dover Beach where everything would be misspelled in relation to today and also hard to pronounce!

Thanks,

Barbara

You have magnificently met the challenge of another unpronouncable section. PL OK!

I lost concentration for a moment and had to struggle to regain it. The long march to Poona contains material that Samuel Rogers included in his Table Talk.

A much-loved Anglo-Irish comedian of Indian Army stock grew up in Poona, and would make references to the place - Spike Milligan. Spike, Peter Sellars and Harry Secombe in "The Goon Show" were the delight of my own early years. I suppose you never happened to hear it in Ohio?

Hi Barbara,

You are so kind! Yes, this section was a nightmare.

I am going to have a listen to Spike Milligan and the famous "Goon Show" I am definitely ready for some humor.

And Table Talk--once again our projects are interconnected!

Pam

Just one note Pam, and only because I think you'd like to fix this - at 8:47.70 you say "hours" instead of "miles" - the troops had not marched for 24 hours, though considering what Wellington got them to do I wouldn't be surprised if they had!
