The Temptation Of St. Anthony by Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880). Translated by Lafcadio Hearn (1850 - 1904)
An extraordinary work of the aesthetic imagination, cast in the form of a psycho-drama detailing the events of one night in the life of the aged hermit, later Saint, Anthony, in the course of which his claims to sainthood are severely tested by, among other things, Gods, Magicians, Science, Food, Monstres, Lust and Death. Beautifully translated by Lafcadio Hearn, justly celebrated for his eerie re-tellings of Japanese ghost stories and legends, it boasts equally extraordinary printworks (for those who follow the link to the Online Text) by renowned symbolist artist Odilon Redon. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated). Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Tony,
I would be happy to MC this for you. It sounds like an interesting book.
Cheers!

Thank you Amy! Now looking for a DPL. I was talking to Sonia about other work and she said this (St. Anthony) looked a bit "special" to her. Well, it's unlikely to be as popular as Poe. A triple-hitter though - Flaubert, Lafcadio Hearn, Odilon Redon. (And not in the catalogue yet!)
Hoorah! Thank you. Was about to put up a pathetic message saying Let's Make Aesthetisicm Great Again! (Well, pathetic in my opinion.) Glad to have you on board.
Don't know if you know, but Raven Edition 2 is a monster hit. All that throat-rasping was not for naught! It can only go downhill from here - freewheeling all the way.

First one in. There's a cry of children laughing in the garden at the end just where he's contemplating blending into the infinite which I found rather charming (and is not "stolen" off the Internet). Happy read/listening.
Just done two. Collapsed on the bed with severe leg cramp (PAIN!) as Saint Anthony fell prostrate on his mat. Is this a sign? I await instruction. In the meantime, while awaiting healthcare (possibly delayed), I have to say I left off the footnotes giving references to biblical texts - they don't seem to have been added by Flaubert or Hearn and they interrupt the flow of the story (unlike Scheherezade's 1002nd. Tale where that is the whole point). Now I have to go and listen to some stories recorded for me by a storyteller friend who collected them off an elderly Native teller living in Chicago (this is true).
Best of luck with your leg cramp. A lot of meds cause muscle cramps. I have a friend who is part Native American and who though retired teaches a college course on Native American culture. I'm sure she would love to hear the stories. I'm sure others, like me, would also.
3 in. I'll ask my friend in what format they'll be released. She's working on an audio of sun and moon stories at present and finding it strangely interesting. Hence my input. It's all new to her. (Go see my Poe I don't think would be a suitable thing to say.) The person she was collecting from was elderly and moved to Chicago to be near her family. She used to tell for NASA at Jodrell Bank and other sites where she could tell her stories of the stars. She didn't trust anyone in America enough to tell her stories too so she chose my friend (an Englander with gypsy heritage) to tell her star stories to. As the co-ordinator of the project said - I haven't seen her this fired up in twenty years! My friend (Cassandra) went straight out and told her versrions of the stories at a story club in Chicago. She said the teller she liked best was a tall wild (in the best way) black guy from the south side. Can't pass on any audios I've got (of course) - but she'll be interested in your friend's interest and I'll see what I can do. As I commented on her audios a few days ago possibly not a lot. I didn't say - hey, look at mine! This will stand in my favour at the pearly gates. At least in my opinion.
This was my reply from my friend - so I guess she'd like to be in touch with yours.
Will you tell your friend that when the project is up on the website - all the stories would be freely available - and we wouid love a diverse audience to listen - and to watch them (one of the stories is being filmed with American Sign Language to make the project accessible to the deaf community.
So yes I would be delighted to talk directly to your friends friend about what I am doing
The eclipse project is global stories (with two American Indian tales - which I had to fight for - for US non American Indian storytellers dont tell these stories) but future projects will be working direclty with American and Canadian First Nation tales and I would love anyone's input - especially of course from American Indian community.
