Laws by Plato (c. 428 BC - c. 347 BC). Translated by Benjamin Jowett (1817 - 1893).

Quote:
Laws (Greek: Νόμοι) is Plato's last and longest dialogue. It is generally agreed that Plato wrote this dialogue as an older man, having failed in his effort in Syracuse on the island of Sicily to guide a tyrant's rule, instead having been thrown in prison. ( Wikipedia) ( )

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of Laws. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"Laws, by Plato. Translated by Benjamin Jowett. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of Laws, by Plato. Translated by Benjamin Jowett. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Laws, by Plato. Translated by Benjamin Jowett."

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename laws_##_plato_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. laws_01_plato_128kb.mp3)

I'll MC.

I cleaned up the template intros, etc. - looks like you put Plato's name in the book title, so it duplicated it through the template as part of the title. :)

Are they chapters? If not, you could say "Section [number]" in the intro/outro instead. As long as there's a clear numbering system that a listener can use to "page through" the files quickly and know which one they're on, you can use that system.

I won't be able to set up the MW for a few hours. In the meantime, feel free to start recording.

OK, you're set up. I reused the old database entry, so all the sections are parsed out already.

I've added Cheryl as DPL, assuming there are no objections to that. :)

Have fun!

P.S. I removed the part about 10 seconds of silence at the end for files 30 minutes or longer. We changed the policy so that all files can have 5 seconds.

The original set-up did not appear to include the Introduction and Analysis or Excursus, only the Books. I am glad to do the entire work with all the parts. Just checking to see what should be included Thanks, Jim

Your choice!

If you want to add sections, you can do so by clicking on "add new section" in the Magic Window. It'll add it to the bottom of the list. From there you can drag it up to wherever it should be.

Thanks for advice. Those sections are considerable, but they are a part of the work, so it only seems appropriate to include them.

Thank you. I figure I'll just do the best I can with these long Greek and Latin passages. Most readers won't pay much attention, I hope.

And there's a lot more to come. I really appreciate your help. I like this kind of stuff, but I am not sure it is everyone's cup o' tea.

Well, Cheryl and Tricia, not so much extra as I thought because apparently there are two versions of the books, one not as clearly set up as a dialogue (which made me think it was more analysis) and then what I would call the more official one, which I will record, assuming there is no reason to do both. And I would like to re-designate the introductory material with the section number. Now that I know I won't be recording the extra material, I am left with a pretty short end to the Introduction and Analysis section. Should I add it to the already PLOK'd part 2 of Intro and Analysis or just have a very short final section? Have I completely confused you?

Are you talking about the "Excursus" and whether that should be appended onto the previous section? I guess that's up to you. Cheryl could download and just check the new material (if you give her an approximate starting time).

Or you could do a short 3rd section. *shrug*
