Checking in to say I'm a bit busy with family stuff at the moment. I will probably get back to recording in a couple of weeks when everyone is safely off to college.

Just checking in to say I'm still here. I'm writing and recording a (free) short audiobook on creative thinking in mechanical design which is taking up all of my spare time. I only have a couple of chapters to go, so I should be finished in two weeks or so.

If you are interested you can listen to it here http://www.clivecatterall.com/podcast_archive.html

I should get back to Samuel Smiles soon.

Thanks for your patience!

Clive.

Real life is intruding, so no recording this weekend :(

Hope to get back to this soon ... I've read the chapter and its a good-un' about Joseph Bramah. You can trace through from Bramah's workshop through Maudslay to Whitworth, Nasmyth and other giants of mechanical engineering, so this is where we start to come across our heroes!

Section 13 is uploaded and ready for PL.

Goodness me I've looked at chapter 12 (sections 14 on), and there is so much to say about Maudslay that his chapter is going to take three sections! He really was a brilliant mechanical engineer. We still use some of his ideas today...

Section 14 is ready for PL. This chapter split into two quite neatly.

Maudslay has already invented the lip seal (hollow collar) and the slide rest by the end of this half of the chapter! Most of the rest of the chapter must be about the Portsmouth Block-Works and his work with M. Brunel? We get some of Nasmyth's tortured wordiness towards the end that is incredibly hard to read - it is so waffly. C'mon James - you were a great engineer but you never ever used 10 words when you can get away with 150.

ETA:
It doesn't sound waffly when you read, though!
