Now, Pam, Section 28:

The editor has spared us a few dramatic pages about M. de Vitrolles, an ultra-royalist who was to wield considerable power during and after the Restoration of the Bourbons.

The young Vitrolles had been caught engaging in sadistic and perverted abuse of his mother in law, Mme. de Bouillon. M. de La Tour du Pin, M. Lally and two other prominent exiles reported him to the Alien Office which gave him three days’ notice to leave England for good. The matter was hushed up.

In fairness to the young doctor, Mme dLTdP was wrapped in a cloak and the baby was arriving a couple of months early.

Hi Barbara,

Section 29 is PL OK.

That was very interesting about Josephine and about the courtesan's house with all the mirrors!

Hi Barbara,

Section 30 is PL OK.
Sad about most of her kids dying before her.

Pam, I am guessing that Queen Maria Luisa of Spain has bobbed up now and then in your history reading and that you are familiar with Goya's portraits of her? (I'd have had him clapped in irons).

It must have been still too early in 1910 to be able to refer to ladies' underwear in English.

Hi Barbara,

Section 31 is PL OK.

Yes, I remember her portrait well! Better than 500 pages of revolutionary rhetoric to argue the insipidity of royalty.

Wonderful book and reading!

Section 32, Pam, I hope you can't tell that I've got the flu:

“Now we are saved! Here is my sister.” How much better things would have gone if Mme dLTdP had had the running of France.

Best,

Barbara

Hey! A friend who lives in France phoned me the other night and I told her about Mme dLTdP because her husband's family have for a long time had a vineyard near Bordeaux. They drive past Le Bouilh en route and they were kind enough to say they were fascinated by the idea of Lucie and her time in Bordeaux. So I got onto amazon.fr and bought my friend a copy of Caroline Moorehead's "Dancing to the Precipice" https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/08/31/dancing-to-the-precipice.

Section 33, Pam:

The French chapter is twice as long. Dupuytren operates on M. dLTdP, saving his life, and Lucie dismisses the cult of Chateaubriand among intellectual females as “a burlesque”.

The chapter ends:
“J’eus le temps de le bien voir, et la conviction m’est toujours restée que cet enfant-là n’était pas né le matin. C’est un mystère bien inutile à éclaircir, puisque celui qui en est l’object a fourni une aussi courte carrière. Mais j’en fus troublée et préoccupée, sans assurément en faire part à personne, si ce n’est à mon mari.”

Hmmm,

And it’s a good thing I’m checking because I did not get an email notification.

Will listen soon!
