Did Mme. De LTdP saying of her children's nurse - "I did not dare to send her away for fear of worse" put you in mind of Hilaire Belloc's poem about the boy Jim, who ran away from his nurse and got eaten by a lion?

....His Father, who was self-controlled,
Bade all the children round attend
To James's miserable end,
And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse.

Sad!

Hi Barbara,

M de LTdP would be as surprised as I am to discover that Massachusetts is still a heavily forested state (62% has forest cover). Do you know if these would be like the forests of New Hampshire? Bill Bryson informed me that the latter were not the forest primeval but had sprung up to cover the villages and farms abandoned for the richer soils of the mid-West.)

Hi Barbara,

Section 19 is PL OK.

Boston! I was just there. My daughter is a medical intern at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Pam, not Boston this time but, another bit of serendipity, as we meet up again with one of your favourites:

In his book, the Duc de Liancourt described the Schuylers and Van Rensselaers as ‘a set of people remarkable neither for activity nor politeness … the most detestable beings I have hitherto met’.

Though our editor skips the references to him, Mme. dLTdP described Du Petit-Thouars as “exceptionally witty and gay”. A biographer of Mme. DLTdP says: “He made Lucie and Frédéric laugh with stories about the French émigrés at Asylum on the banks of the Susquehanna where he had just spent some months….its [noble] inhabitants reduced to eating robins and boiled tadpoles... Du Petit-Thouars was sad to leave Troy, where he had found his hosts less prone to the general contempt for the Americans that seemed to afflict so many of the French émigrés; and Lucie, in particular, he was enchanted by, saying that she was not only very pretty, but graceful, cheerful, a model of elegance for the local ladies, and that she possessed ‘outstanding cool-headedness and endurance.’” He died a hero at the Battle of the Nile.

Hi Barbara,

Section 21 is PL OK.

Tallyrand to the rescue!
The fever could very well have been malarious.

Talleyrand had already diagnosed it. He sent Mme. dLTdP some cinchona bark. Is there no limit to this man's abilities?
