English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture by Francis Galton (1822 - 1911).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/english-men-of-science-their-nature-and-nurture-by-sir-francis-galton/
The results of a survey undertaken by Galton to learn more about individual differences and similarities between the "pre-eminent" men of his time. Brief biographical information, biometric data and extensive quotations have been compiled and presented. ( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/englishmenscien04galtgoog
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK, you have a Magic Window and can start.

A few things:

- I noticed that some of the pages were unreadable from the scan on Archive. Here is a link to the same version of the book on hathitrust https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044012431193;view=1up;seq=5. I don't know if you are in the US (if not, you may not be able to see the text here), but if you do, you'll be able to use this text for the pages where you can't read from the archive scan

- This looks like a very long book to fit into only 6 sections, but you can add more sections to the MW as you need them. Please remember that sections cannot be longer than 70 minutes.

- I shortened the filename for you :)

- If the summary written by you? If so, I'll add that information behind the scene. If you didn't write it, where did you find it?

- I notice you hadn't filled in the genre/keywords in the template. You can think of those as you read the book and I can add them before cataloging.

- Do you have a DPL lined up? If not, we can add a ~ to the subject line.

Ok, that's all I can think of right now. You are ready to start filling out the MW and recording  Please let me know if you have questions.

After looking at the size of each chapter, I'm estimating 10 sections divided up in pairs or maybe a triple for each chapter. There are also some tables, lists, and censored phrases that appear in various parts throughout the book. Whenever there is a deleted word, I say "blank" so don't complain that it sounds weird. Yes, I was the one who wrote out the summary, and I can change it if needed, but I also wanted to know what sort of category this could fit into? It is the results of a survey which is also attached in the appendix of the book, so what would be the most accurate so you think?

Special thanks to craigdave1 who is volunteering to be a DPL

Welcome, Dave :)

That sounds fine. You can add as many sections as you want in the MW (there is a button near the top called "Add new section.")

I had a quick look through the book and saw both tables and lists. It depends on the nature of the tables and lists whether it makes sense to read them, or in some way summarize them or what. If you have questions about that when you get there, please feel free to discuss it in the thread. I didn't look closely enough to find the censored words, only places where the scan was missing something (and in those cases the hathitrust version had the page or words missing). If something is missing in both the Archive and hathitrust version, it works to say "blank" :)

Good, thanks. I just need to know that the summary is in the public domain. If you want to change it as you read the book, you can, but you don't have to as far as I am concerned. Hmm, I don't quite know which category would be most suitable, but maybe "non-fiction/science" is a place to start? We don't have to add these right now, and you'll probably get a better idea as you read :)

most of chapter 3 and 4 is full of biographical information with some quotes removed by Galton to protect the identity of the respondant. There are plenty of "...." spaces popping up throughout the text to break apart some sentences.

"Preface of" should be the first words in the intro.

chapter 1 part 1
40.59 duration

the rest of the chapter takes another 40 minutes

I was not sure how to pronounce some of the names in the early part of this chapter, so im open to suggestions if anyone has them. One more thing about the preface: should the title say "preface of english men of science" or should I be recording that on the audio?

1 PL OK.

The MW should be changed so that the first section is 0.
I'm not sure I understand your question but to aid navigation through the book, especially important for blind listeners, it helps to open each section with the chapter number or in this case the word preface.

I'll add a section 0 to the MW and drag the sections into the right places :) (Niobium, if you ever need to move sections around in the MW, you can drag and drop them. It is pretty neat! I think you can also create new sections -- but only your MC can delete or change things around to make a sectino 0 if you didn't previously have one.)

I'm not entirely sure I understand the question either. I think the title in the MW looks good the way it is ("Preface"). I would read the intro disclaimer as "Preface of English Men of Science (by ...). This is a LibriVox recording etc." Does that help?

how can I change the origin and taste for science chapter to 'assigned'? When I added a few extra sections in the admin page, I accidentally tagged one as 'open' instead
