De Civitate Dei Libri XXII by Saint Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/de-civitate-dei-libri-xxii-by-saint-augustine-of-hippo/

The City of God Against the Pagans (Latin: De ciuitate Dei contra paganos), often called The City of God, is a book of Christian philosophy written in Latin by Augustine of Hippo in the early 5th century AD. The book was in response to allegations that Christianity brought about the decline of Rome and is considered one of Augustine's most important works, standing alongside The Confessions, The Enchiridion, On Christian Doctrine and On the Trinity. As a work of one of the most influential Church Fathers, The City of God is a cornerstone of Western thought, expounding on many profound questions of theology, such as the suffering of the righteous, the existence of evil, the conflict between free will and divine omniscience, and the doctrine of original sin. • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/decivitatedeilib01augu https://archive.org/details/sanctiaureliiau11augugoog
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK, your MW is ready to be filled in. I was wondering if you might prefer De Civitate Dei at PG instead of the scan at archive? If not, the scan at archive is fine, I just wanted to offer another option for a text.

Many thanks! I could not find a Latin text for De Civitate Dei at Project Gutenberg:

Duh! You're right, what I was suggesting is an English translation. Don't pay any attention to me, I was digging around the internet for De Civitate Dei in English and Latin for the group I'm moderating on Latin Study. We are moving on to this text once we finish Confessions, and I was working on getting us all set up when you send me a PM about the same text. I was blending the two and got a little mixed up! Too bad there isn't a Latin text for De Civitate Dei on PG, that would make our lives easier!

I thought I would follow the partition of the English edition but I cannot do it. On one hand Latin has longer words, on the other the English reader is much faster than I. Anyway, part 1 and 2 are ready for PL.
The length of my part 1 is 33:48, that of my part 2 37:31. Compare with 47:06 for both in the English reading! This means that I will need more sections, almost twice as many. I guess it's not a problem, is it?

It is no problem to add more sections as you need them. I can add them anytime, or you can do it. There is a button on the left side, Add new section. Click it and add the title, click Add and the new section will appear at the bottom of the MW.
