Viajes de Gulliver a diversos países remotos de Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here: https://librivox.org/viajes-de-gulliver-by-jonathan-swift/

( Phileas Fogg)

I looked earlier and didn't see a translator, either. As far as I could tell from a VERY quick internet search, Argentina's rules for non-credited works is that they enter the PD 50 years after publication, so you're definitely safe here.

Thanks Tricia.

Victor - your MW is ready. I've tried shortening the file name - does it make sense? If not, go ahead and change it.

maybe viajesdegulliver sounds better for a spanish speaker but in fact is the same , if it is a problem to change it we can keep it as you set it. I´m not sure if i have to change something in particular or just just save them as viajesdegulliver_##_ and thats all.
Thx by the way

Thanks Victor. I was trying to make something shorter than the suggestion from the template generator.

You can use whatever name you want. Just use it, no need to tell me or change the first post.

As long as the links are correct, everything will work fine at cataloging, with any name you choose!

I see you need help with PLing your files. I can't promise to do them all for the moment, but I'd like to try with the first chapter to see whether how it goes.

Although I don't speak Spanish, I have learnt Italian in school and also some Portuguese for myself at home, and I used to listen a lot to a Spanish rock group some years ago  so I am familiar with romanic languages. I guess I can follow the text if you don't speak too fast. I also know the story, so this will help understanding. I'll try one chapter, then I let you know :)

all right, I finished listening to the first chapter and it went really well. You have a very agreeable, quiet and clear diction, and slow enough so I could follow with the text without any problems. :9: I even understood most of it I think. At least enough to know what’s going on.

I must compliment you for your very clear pronunciation; in my travels through Spain I heard people talk way too fast and blurring their words much more, so it was difficult to understand anything. With your reading, I did not have this difficulty.

Also, the suspense you put into your voice when Gulliver first sees the Liliputians is making it quite lively. I felt totally absorbed into the story. And the direct speech of the Liliputians always sounds so martial and stern, I wished there was more dialogue LOL

In the beginning I was puzzled, because I noticed you pronounced the double ‘ll’ differently than how I thought it would be: for example “calle”, in Spain they say /ca-i-e/ and you say /ca-she/. This took some getting used to, but now I think I start to adopt this pronunciation LOL it sounds cool.

I noticed afterwards that you are from Argentina, so I guess that accounts for the difference in pronunciation. When I learnt Portuguese I started out with a study-book from Portugal and ended up with a book and CD from Brazil, and also there, the differences in pronunciation were quite surprising. I looooove languages, I bet you can tell.

Ok back to the text, I only found two sentences where you deviate a bit from the text. Since you don’t want word perfect, I guess, neither is a real "error", but as it’s my first chapter and I’m not fluent in Spanish, I would like to ask you if it’s ok for you:

> at 11:40: “tuve la fortuna” (p. 16 bottom) – you say “gran fortuna” – I suppose that is negligible, as it means basically the same

> at 12:14: “apenas lo advirtieron, echaron á huir” (p. 17 top) – you say “empezaron”. I think the one means “finish” and the other “start”, correct ? I guess it doesn’t matter in this sentence, but I wanted to make sure with you

If those two are ok with you, you can mark Section 1 PL ok.

Oh and I love to practice this language, so I guess, if you want to, I can take on the DPL job. I have many other projects lined up still, so I cannot promise to rush through these, but I will stick with it to the end. :)

Hey Sonia, welcome, what a wonderful news! I thought nobody would take the dpl. If you can do it I´ll be more than happy. It doesn´t matter if you can do it time to time, i´m also going to record slowly as I have been very busy lately and anyway I´m recording 3 projects at the same time (lol). Well thanks for the nice words you dedicate to my pronunciation. Where do you from? I congratulate you for your interest in different languages, i only know an intermediate english and i can communicate and understand it when i hear and read it but I suck when i try to speak fluently and I´m sure i do a lot of mistakes when I´m writing so i wont delay you with this sort of welcome. As you say those two mistakes are unnoticeable for any who doesn´t have the text. so If you agree, I wont correct them. Well, nice to meet you and thanks a lot for your kind interest in this project, the story of Gulliver is rather long and could be boring time to time but i love it and if it was a frequent reading for me when i was a child, i only read kid´s version, and just when i was in my 30 years i could appreciate all the genious of Swift. Ok excuse my mistakes in this writing and it´s funny to think that you will have to make a big effort to understand me both in spanish and english :D

Hi Victor, nice to hear back from you so quickly.

I'm glad about this actually, as I would not like to be overwhelmed with 20 sections in one day. Well I need to work up the backlog first but after that it will be slower going I guess. I hope the sections all stay in the 20-minute range, as the level of attention needs to be high for me for a language I am not too familiar with. Otherwise I need a pause in-between to stay concentrated.
Well thanks for the nice words you dedicate to my pronunciation. Where do you from? I congratulate you for your interest in different languages
I'm from Luxembourg (tiny country in Europe). Here you have to learn a lot of languages by necessity as nobody speaks our mother-tongue LOL I always had an interest in languages, and learning so many, I guess it helps getting into the intricacies of many other languages I am unfamiliar with. For example, Italian, French and Portuguese really helps me a lot understanding your Spanish, as it is quite similar after all. So I would probably not be able to speak it correctly, but I can understand a bit if I hear it.
As you say those two mistakes are unnoticeable for any who doesn´t have the text. so If you agree, I wont correct them.
it is your text, you have the last word. :) But yes, I also think both errors are negligible, no need to correct them. But if you don't mind, I would like to mention such "trivialities" also in other chapters when I encounter them. In English I feel able to make the call myself if something is negligible, but I would not like to make this decision in a language I cannot speak myself if that's all right with you. I don't want to discard something that turned out really wrong after all in the end.

Who knows, by the end of the book I might be more comfortable in making these decisions. I think I pick up new languages fairly easy, so maybe I learn a bit of the Spanish grammar on the way. :9:

I read the book at university and I did not find it boring at all. And now in Spanish I will surely not be bored. Especially with your interesting way of reading :)
Ok excuse my mistakes in this writing and it´s funny to think that you will have to make a big effort to understand me both in spanish and english :D
 not at all, your English is really good. I bet my Spanish is much worse. Let's see....what can I come up with without the help of google translate: Tu Inglès è bueno. Yo no puedo hablar Español muy bien. (I hope I did not maim the grammar too much  )

I had a bit of time still so I listened to chapter 2 as well. I love the stern "official" voice you are giving this announcer of the emperor.

Here I only have one small note, which might be nothing to change though:

> at 2:37: "de preciosas joyas" (p. 25 bottom): I think you say “cosas”, but I might be mistaken, :hmm: but I thought, maybe ”jewels” is more precise and important than just saying “things” ? Again, as you wish of course.

The rest is PL ok.

thanks MaryAnn, it works. :)

Since it is not needed anymore, maybe you could delete the "help wanted" thread in the Listeners Forum, that's where I saw the project.
