Stanzas to Pale Ale, by Mr. Punch

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/stanzas-to-pale-ale-by-mr-punch/
LibriVox volunteers bring you -- recordings of "Stanzas to Pale Ale" by Mr. Punch.
This was the Weekly Poetry project for July 24, 2022.
-----
Punch was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841. Reflecting their satiric and humorous intent, the two founding editors took for their name and masthead the anarchic glove puppet, Mr. Punch, of Punch and Judy. In light of the summer's heat, we offer this ode to the (as asserted) most refined of all beers, the Pale Ale. Please, imbibe responsibly and only when one has reached the legal drinking age. :) (Summary by TriciaG)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Stanzas to Pale Ale by Mr. Punch, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
Oh! I have loved thee fondly, ever
Preferr'd thee to the choicest wine;
From thee my lips they could not sever
By saying thou contain'dst strychnine.
Did I believe the slander? Never!
I held thee still to be divine.

For me thy color hath a charm,
Although 'tis true they call thee Pale;
And be thou cold when I am warm,
As late I've been—so high the scale
Of FAHRENHEIT—and febrile harm
Allay, refrigerating Ale!

How sweet thou art!—yet bitter, too
And sparkling, like satiric fun;
But how much better thee to brew,
Than a conundrum or a pun,
It is, in every point of view,
Must be allow'd by every one.

Refresh my heart and cool my throat,
Light, airy child of malt and hops!
That dost not stuff, engross, and bloat
The skin, the sides, the chin, the chops,
And burst the buttons off the coat,
Like stout and porter—fattening slops!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Sorry for the early entry - but, I just couldn't resist or miss this one. This may/may not have been my anthem a time or two back in the day! :lol: ...

Sounded like you had fun with this one. 8-)

At 1:17, "That dost not stuff" - usually "dost" is pronounced like "dust". It's up to you if you want to alter it; sometimes it's not worth the altering. :)

I did have fun with it :) ... yeah the dost - "dust" thing is my strange eastern/midwest accent. I have a heck of a time with old english.., but if I can get by with it, I'll skip the alter. Thank you.

Tricia, I agree. I wasn't going to mention it, but the taste of beer is vile. Paula
