Hosea: from The Holy Bible with Original Notes, by Thomas Scott (1747 - 1821)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/hosea-from-the-holy-bible-by-thomas-scott/
Hosea, whose prophecy we now enter upon, exercised his sacred office for a great many years: he predicted the captivity of the ten Tribes long before it arrived, yet he probably lived to witness its near approach. He is supposed to have been of the kingdom of Israel, though his prophecies frequently relate to Judah also His style is remarkably concise, senlentious, and unconnected, though some parts are peculiarly pathetic, animated, and sublime. His general scope was to convince his people of their exceeding sinfulness, and to warn them by the terror, and lead them by the goodness, of God to repentance. (Summary by Introduction)

I'm glad of a break from Butler though I planned to start listening to the lectures about the book tonight.

Section 0 is PL OK.

Section 1 has two missing parts.

1. at about 2;21, before "Notes", the following should be inserted - ""verse 11: Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: "for great shall be the day of Jezreel."

2. at about 6:36 insert "children of whoredoms ; and others would be apt to think" after "consider them as"
and before "the same".

Wow, you've been busy.

Chapter 1 is PL OK as are chapters 2, 3, and 4. :D

There is just one small correction for chapter 5.
at about 0:55 it should be "verse 4" not "5" before "They will not frame their doings ..."

I'll be back with more tomorrow.

Chapters 5 and 8 are PL OK.

Chapter 6:
repeated text - 6:50 "and thought to compensate by them for their entire neglect of justice, mercy, and piety,
and for all their scandalous crimes" and at 6:57 "and thus to compensate by them for their entire neglect of justice, mercy, and piety, and for all their scandalous crimes" - the first is correct

9:00 This is ok as it stands but if you want to change it. in "vindicating their evil deeds" you are missing "evil". I personally like "evil" in it as it adds emphasis to the badness.

Chapter 7:
about 1:55 missing "verse 12" before "when they shall go"

Chapter 9 is PL OK.

Chapter 10
At about 4:25 I hear "in swearing allegiance to their ripeness" should be "in swearing allegiance to their princes". Could you please double check and either fix or let me know I have misheard it.

Chapter 11
At about 2:20 missing "NOTES" before "verse 1".

Chapter 12
at about 7:09 I hear "excused" instead of "executed" in "might at least be executed"
at about 7:35 have "note" before "Zech. xiv. 16 — 19", you have not used that previously in this type of reference.
at about 10:13 text reads "neighbourhood. {Judg. viii. 8, 9. Note 3—6}", don't know if this is any big deal or not, but you read
"Note 3-6" before "Judges viii, 8,9".

If you feel any of these are too picky please let me know

Help.

The two versions - Internet Archive and Google are not identical. I listened with the Internet Archive version except for those few pages that were missing from it.

for example in chapter 13

3:36 after " Yet nothing could induce the people to renounce idolatry." you have "the word rendered trembling occurs in no other place. some interpret the cause of jeroboam, a descendent of Ephraim, speaking words suited to excite horror, when he commanded the worship of the golden calves in order to his own exaltation and that of his family in Israel.". None of that is in the Internet archive version.

How do you wish me to proceed? There are also issues with chapter 14 and I don't know how much text is added in the google version for the first 9 chapters.

Thanks,

I'm sorry about this. I wasn't expecting the archive source to have missing pages. I think the only way to proceed is for us to change the text source from the archive to the google books and then I will go through each section and check for alterations. If a change is trivial or doesn't change the meaning (eg: I noticed "and" become "though" in the introduction), I'll leave it but if it's significant, I'll change it and give you timestamps.

edit: Let me know if any changes are needed.
(context is in the post above).

I've compared the first chapter recorded with the google books text and it is identical. Would it be acceptable for me to:
- leave the existing PL OK sections as they are
- add the google books as a second text source
- I check the chapters where both the archive and the google books source exist (in practice, parts of chapter 10, 12 and then all of 13 and 14) and conform my reading to the archive source.

Basically, take the archive source as my base text and supplement from the gbooks source in the places which are missing, knowing that it is very close but might have a sentence or two added (which I can't verify because there seems to only be one scan of this exact version on the internet).
