Diana, I've uploaded Section 12.

It starts on text page 67 / PDF page 82 - Of the forestalling of markets, and the Billingsgate bummarees.

Erratum on text page 69/ PDF 84 (at 16.32 in the recording): Final total in table, "263, 281, 000" was corrected to "263, 261, 000".

Very near the end, at 39.50 (on text page 72/ PDF 97), in the second from last paragraph in the second column, I wasn't sure whether the interviewee or the narrator was speaking the first sentence ("Sometimes the sale on the rounds ..."). Because of the sentence structure and some of the words used, I've assumed that the first sentence was from Mayhew, and the remaining two from the woman he was interviewing.

Thanks, Diana;

I estimate that we're about a seventh of the way through.

Section 14 uploaded.

I'm afraid that it's a bit hypnotic, with a couple of tables of information.

It starts on text page 79 / PDF page 94: "Of the Street-Sellers of Fruit and Vegetables", and ends on text page 83/PDF page 98.
The next section starts on 83/98: 'Of "Green" Fruit Selling in the Streets'

I've included the errata in the table on text page 80/ PDF 95. All are corrections to the totals:

Damsons, corrected to 37,650 - at 8min 14 secs
Currants (Red) corrected to 175,000
Currants (Black) corrected to 112,000
Currants (White) corrected to 26,800
Carrots corrected to 18,017,000
French beans corrected to 221,200
Spring onions corrected to 104,400
Herbs corrected to 37,900

I've put the marked footnotes at the end of the table.
I've no idea what "junks." is an abbreviation for as a measure of turnip tops.
Strawberries, raspberries and mulberries are measured in "pottles", which is a volume of two quarts/half a gallon.

Hi Peter,

spotted one stumble in section 15:
9:19 - the gentr... the gentry.

Otherwise OK!

Diana, have you started on section 16? If you haven't, please hold off on it, as I've just realised that there's a major break in the text, about three pages after the end of my recording, so it would be tidier to add them to the end of section 16, rather than record either a very short section or a section with a major change of direction a short way in.

If you've PL'd section 16 already, I'll sort out the best way of going on, and get back to you.

EDIT: I've found out at last that "ing-uns" are onions. I've put a note about this in the summary.

Diana,

Here you go; section 16 has now been re-uploaded .... it's nearly an hour long.

In case you've already PL'd the earlier version of section 16, the new stuff (onion selling) starts at 40.39 in this new upload. I'm sorry to have mucked you about ... oh, and I apologise for my "Irish" accent!

Errata near the end:

1. "Totals" in the table on text page 95 / PDF 210
plums (at 50.45) - now 6,240 instead of 6,270
bullace (at 51.06) - now 1,950 instead of 1,960
red currants (at 51.26) - now 15,200 instead of 15,300
Total for green fruit (at 53.36) - now 332,400 instead of 333,420

2. "Totals" in the text at the top of page 96 / PDF 211
green fruit (at 57.04) - now 332,400 instead of 333,420
vegetables (at 57.14) - now 292,240 instead of 292,000
Final figure for costermongers' annual income (at 57.45) - now 2,086,490 instead of 2,087,270

Another soporific table, I'm afraid.

This was Section 16, starting with Of Orange and Lemon Selling in the streets. PDF pages 102-121 / text 87-96 [Total recorded so far 9:43:34]
Next is Section 17, starting with Of the stationary street-sellers .... From PDF 121- / text 96-

Section 17 uploaded.

Starts at "Of the stationary street-sellers ....", runs through PDF pages 111,114-119 / text pages 96, 99-104

Total so far: 10:25:01

Next section starts with The Street Irish on 119 / 104

Section 18 uploaded.

18 Starts at "Of the Street-Irish" - from PDF 119-126 / text 104-111 total recorded so far: 11:12:50

Next section:
19 Starts at "Irish Lodging Houses for Immigrants" - from PDF 126-135 / text 111-120

Mayhew describes visiting the Rosemary Lane area, where a lot of the Irish were living. I managed to find a map of the area (from about a century before, but it shows the labyrinth of streets and courts that he talks about). It's a few streets north-east of the Tower of London, running east-west. If you'd like to see it, I've put it on mediafire cloud storage: [Later edit: link is no longer valid. Hi Peter,

I'm finally back, had a busy month, sorry!

In section 16 @5:03 the end of the sentence sounds weird, as if the recording skipped when you say "but for the chill there".
