English as She is Spoke by Pedro Carolino ( - 0).

Quote:
English as She is Spoke is a 19th century Portuguese-to-English phrasebook that has become a classic of absurdist humor due to the apparent fact that it's writer had absolutely no knowledge of English. For obscure reasons the otherwise unknown author, Pedro Carolino, used a dictionary to translate Portuguese words to French, then a second dictionary to convert French to English, producing an incoherent but hilarious result. Mark Twain said of this work, "Nobody can add to the absurdity of this book, nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect." ( Pleonic)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I've put you in, Chuck, with the understanding that I'll remove you if Pleonic has someone else lined up. :)

FYI, I switched the reading copy from a Gutenberg copy to a pdf on Internet Archive. It's easier for me to read and the Gutenberg had a few minor transcription errors.

First section, Introduction and Preface, is up. Please pardon my French and Portuguese pronunciation.

I've changed the source in the database entry.

FYI, the file name for the first file should have been englishassheisspoke_00_carolino_128kb.mp3. I'll fix it at cataloging time. :)

Ooops! I can change it and reupload if you'd rather. That just slipped my mind. :?

If there are any PL notes, then you can change it. Otherwise, it's OK the way it is. It takes very little effort to fix it at cataloging time. (I think it's one copy/paste and two clicks.)

I'll give this a listen tonight. Sorry it took so long -- holidays and all.
