Opening the West with Lewis and Clark, by Edwin L. Sabin (1870 - 1952)
One of the most significant and astounding explorations, in 1804-1806, was the expedition under the leadership of Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark opening up a trail from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Coast at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. Edwin Sabin writes an engaging account of this challenging journey with ample dialogue so that it reads like an adventure story rather than just a history full of facts and figures, but he fairly represents the characters and events of the long expedition. (Summary by Larry Wilson)

Hi Larry,

I'd like to say thank you for selecting another of the projects I produced, with Distributed Proofreaders, for Project Gutenberg. In appreciation, I'd like to participate in this project by recording Chapter 1: Making Ready (the first Chapter 1 :) ), if that's OK with you.

Thank you, Todd, for setting this up!

And, I've made the first assignments.
Glad to be doing another of yours. I have a list, although I think I've misplaced the first list you sent me, so I don't have all of them.

A DPL would be most WELCOME!

I would be happy to PL this project. I am curious about the Lewis and Clark expedition and would like to know more about it (not something we were taught about in UK) :?

I added Alan as DPL.

Given the 1803 date for the expedition, we weren't far from still being part of the UK. (Although this part was French.)

Thanks, Todd

Thank you, Alan!
Well, I happen to be in the little town where I graduated from high school, right on the Oregon trail and the Lewis & Clark expedition. So we grew up with this history. Unbeknownst to me, today they were having special events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school, so got in on a few activities and met up with some old classmates I hadn't seen in 57 years! The town is Milton-Freewater, Oregon but just a short distance from Walla Walla, Washington and the fort there which is mentioned in this book.

Anyway, glad to have you on board. Let me know if you have any questions about pronunciations, like Sacajawea.

Yes, of course!
I see you've had your test recording approved, so now I just need to know how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalog -- real name, pseudonym, or any nickname you wish. This is how you will be credited for all of your LV work.

Well, let's kick this off with the first three sections:

https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/openingthewest_00_sabin_128kb.mp3 3:04
https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/openingthewest_01_sabin_128kb.mp3 3:00
https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/openingthewest_02_sabin_128kb.mp3 9:42

NOTE to DPL: These do not have chapter numbers so not included in the intro, but all others should.

Pronunciation of the author's name may vary, which is fine.
