The Conspiracy of Pontiac by Francis Parkman, Jr. (1823 - 1893).

this project was abandoned on nov. 23rd, 2016.
pschempf is adopting this as a solo.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-conspiracy-of-pontiac-and-the-indian-war-after-the-conquest-of-canada-by-francis-parkman-jr/
"The Conspiracy of Pontiac" was Parkman's first history book and first published in 1851. It covers the Indian wars of 1763 to 1769. Pontiac, an Ottawa chief, put together a coalition of Indian tribes from North America around the Great Lakes region and the Illinois and Ohio Countries to attack the British under General Jeffrey Amherst. Although written first, it is the sequel to his seven volume masterwork about "France and England in North America." ( Richard Carpenter)
  • Text source Project Gutenberg (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/39253/39253-h/39253-h.htm The footnotes and the appendixes were not recorded for ease of listening.
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Carolin,

Hey ho, old buddy. I'll start this weekend.

You in Finland, Sweden or have you decided to take over Russia nowadays? :)

I have moved to Kentucky, which is considerably colder than Atlanta... :hmm:

Katdad,

Minor confusion with the section and chapter references.

The MW refers to S 2 as Chapter 01.

The text in the chapter refers to it as Chapter 02.

Your instructions, Senor.

I'm rather assuming you'll want me to record it as Section 02, and Chapter 01, because the preface was Section 01, Preface.

Brendan: The Preface is section 0. Chapter 1 is section 1.

Katdad,

Heh...I always start a bit rough:)

I'm enjoying the language especially in this segment of Parkman. He has a reputation of being fairly nasty about the Indians, but this text shows he has a deal of respect for them.

I'm fascinated by how they came about the rule of only marrying brides/squaws from another tribe, and how the sachem's power in not transferred by primogeniture, but must pass down the female or brother line.

Wonder how they came about that?

Brendan: FP lived with the Sioux for a couple of months and wrote about it in his "Oregon Trail." I read COP so long ago that I can't remember much about it. I should listen to it once we are done.
