Summa Theologica - 11 Pars Secunda Secundae (qq.47-170), Treatise on the Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/summa-theologica-11-pars-secunda-secundae-treatise-on-the-cardinal-virtues-prudence-justice-fortitude-temperance-by-saint-thomas-aquinas/
The Summa Theologica (or the Summa Theologiae or simply the Summa, written 1265–1274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–1274) although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners and a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of that time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God. (Summary adapted from the Wikipedia)

This selection of the Summa Theologica covers questions 47-170 of the Secunda Secundae ("Second-half of the Second Part"), comprising a Treatise on the Cardinal Virtues: Prudence (questions 47-56), Justice (questions 57-122), Fortitude (questions 123-140), and Temperance (questions 141-170) - each with their own subordinate moral virtues.

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Maria, when I was consulting the LibriVox catalogue to see how the preceding Summa projects were labelled, I saw that amongst the projects "in progress" that all are listed as "Fully subscribed" except for this one that reads "Open" - so I was just wondering whether there was a missing element somewhere... :?: Otherwise I saw that it is "solo" and all of the questions are assigned to "mscllc".

All fixed! The system is supposed to update it automatically when all sections have an assigned reader, but sometimes it missed behave. I just had to go in and change it - an easy thing. :-) Thanks for catching it!

Maria,
The number of sections in the MW is now up to 133 (from the original 124) owing to having subdivided several of the questions into parts in order to ensure respecting the maximum recording length for each section of the project. :)

Question 47 is PL OK!

Just a couple of reminders about the file naming. If you could try to remember to put a underscore between summa_theologica, that would be great. All the other previous volumes were done that way, and in order to sort correctly we need the dash. If you forget, I can fix it on my end.

One specific thing about this project - since there are over 100 files, you will need to number the files with three numbers, in this case 001.

For example: https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/summa_theologica2_11_001_aquinas_128kb.mp3

I'll go ahead and fix this one for you! I know it is confusing to keep track of everything with so many going at once!

Thank you, Maria. Yes, I overlooked including the third digit for project 11 to allow for the 100+ sections in that one.

Otherwise, now that the format has been established, the exports should be consistent since I copy the format from the existing list. I am assuming, therefore, that the request about remembering the underscores (instead of spaces) was simply a reminder, and not because the title did not appear that way.

Here are three more sections:

Maria, let me do that again!
I see now the missing underscore in the middle of "summatheologica", now taken into consideration...

You have the format now! Sorry for the confusion. If you ever have a typo in a file name in the future, just let me know and I can fix it without you having to reupload again!

These three are all PL OK!
