PL Notes 3.1

You do like to take folks along tortuously narrow, winding and dangerously rocky mountain paths. And me a Louisiana swamp gal, hardly a hill in sight!

15:37 stands on edge in the air, you say stands on the edge of the air (I can't quite picture this).
18:30 it must be brought to Tegucigalpa, to is missing
23:38 While the woman at the first place at which we stopped, second at is missing.
23:51 until we were told, were is missing
50:25 deep shadowy pools, you say shallowy
5439 trail to Tegucigalpa, to is missing

Yes it is a long file, but you kept up the momentum.

Thank you for your careful listening and corrections. As always, they'll make the book better!

I'm "off duty" for a day or two, maybe three. I'll incorporate the changes and resume recording after that.

Section 4 (Chapter 3.2) In Honduras, Part 2

A fascinating description of a revolutionary republic (with a dose of good old American Jingoism larded on  ).

Saturday morning, hot coffee, and a dollop of Jingoism. What could be better?

PL Notes 04

5:02 you say "twisting on his tail", delete on
31:37 boundaries of Honduras, you slur it into "fonduras"
32:33 the hated monarchical institution of Great Britain at Belize, you say Institute of Great Britain.
38:10 the band to omit their customary salute, you say admit
38:50 amusing to see the more prominent men of the place, you say palace (they were not yet near a palace)
47:25 Robinson Crusoe, you say Kar-u'-so.

A few items of interest:
This sentence has me perplexed: "The plain upon which Comyagua stands stretches for many miles, and the nature of the stones and pebbles on its surface would seem to show that it was once the bottom of a great lake. Now its round pebbles and sandy soil make it a valley of burning heat, into which the sun beats without the intervening shadows of trees or mountains to save the traveller from the fierceness of its rays." Questions: Did the water recede, or did the ground rise? I have the same questions about the plains of of the Midwest USA, which they say were once under water. Where did the water go?

Also considered this: Where are the bullet holes in the US Capitol? Who put them there? There are a few in the Louisiana Capitol harking back to the Huey Long assasination, but nothing to compare to routine Honduran shoot-em-up politics.

Orogeny pushes land up; water runs downhill. There are fossils on top of the mountains by my home.
Where are the bullet holes in the US Capitol?
Are there any?

Thanks for the corrections. I'll incorporate them shortly. In the meantime:

04 is PL OK.

Sorry about misquoting the times at 38:10 and 38:50. You found them at 39:10 and 39:50. What a clever boy!

Have a nice trip, come back safe, and Happy Holidays to you. Try not to get brushed off your saddle with a careening horse!

Huh? Say...what?

Our travelers now arrive in Panama at an interesting time in the history of the Panama Canal. The French effort under De Lesseps had failed, mostly through underestimating the ravages of malaria. The US was just beginning to appreciate the size of the problem it had inherited, and there was much political agitation for a competing canal through Nicaragua. This concept endured long. In the fifties, the fledgling Atomic Energy Commission actually considered excavating it with atomic bombs! Even today, the alternate canal concept resurfaces whenever the Sandinistas start wondering "Well, why not us?"

You have to love South American history...

That was a fast "week or so". Surprise, surprise! So tomorrow morning it's the Panama Canal for me, wherever you may be. Looking forward to it.

That's the final chapter. Have fun listening! :D

Would you like to revise the summary? You do that better than I. Be sure to give yourself the credit.
