SOLO A Town is Drowning by FREDERIK POHL and C. M. KORNBLUTH, by Frederik Pohl (1919 - 2013) and C. M. Kornbluth (1923 - 1958)
This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/a-town-is-drowning-by-frederik-pohl/

TORN FROM TODAY'S HEADLINES
This novel takes you right into the heart of the new flood country, the Northeast United States which had generally been free of hurricanes and attendant floods. Now disaster has struck, more than once--terrible and grim.

Although this novel will give you an accurate and brilliantly vivid picture of what it's like to live through a flood, even more importantly it will show you what the people are like who fought the catastrophe and how those who survived are still fighting. In the persons of Starkman the burgess, Groff the dynamic young executive, Sharon the shrewd opportunist, Mrs. Goudeket, the resort owner, and others, you will meet and understand the varying human elements that the flood unleashed and intensified. Through it all you will sense a growing feeling of pride--that despite the selfishness of some, the people of the town met the terrible onslaught with courage and a sense of mutual help.

Already well known for their superb science fiction, Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth demonstrate here their equal power in the realistic contemporary novel. (Summary by book jacket)

Notes from the narrator
To me, A Town is Drowning was an interesting reading and recording assignment as it provided a look back at the dialogue and narrative structure for the dramatic works of the 1950’s, my earliest memories.
Echoes of World War II, the Atomic Bomb, and the Cold War were ever present in this 1955 world; as was the idea of American Idealism and Opportunity. The story narrative tended to be strait-forward, black and white, with minimal cultural gray issues.

Yet I also observed aspects found in the 2022 world, the struggle for equality across ethinic backgrounds, stereotypes, and class divisions, the lure of money and power, and increasingly - the occurrence of natural disasters, today attributed to global climate change. Authors Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth created a realistic contemporary novel for 1955, but for me, much of their story resonates with the world of today.

I hope you enjoy listening to, A Town is Drowning.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Magic Window is in place! To gain access you'll need to create a password, and then you use this password for the uploader, too (with your forum-name as username).

Here's everything you need to know about the MW: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window
Start with "Accessing the System – First Time Login" to create your password.

Then basically you fill in the section titles, add the URL from the uploaded files, with their durations in the Notes column, and you toggle the Status column to Ready for PL. Post in the thread whenever you add a new file to the Magic Window.

As I understand it, you have your recordings ready. Make sure the intro/outro match the ones in the first post. You can advertise for a PL with a New Topic in this forum: viewforum.php?f=61 and you use this template https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/ProofListening_Template by adding the information from your project.

Let me know if anything is unclear, or you need any help.

Have fun with your project!

Wow! So many chapters at once!

If a DPL doesn’t pick this up and there are still sections left to PL tomorrow, I’ll try my hand/ear at one or two.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi, there.

I started to listen to Section 00 and made some notes, but now my power is out. Again, I'll try to get back to you with some PL notes or approvals tomorrow, unless others have speedily listened to what sounds like a very gripping novel.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi, Maurice,

Okay, here are the PL notes for Section 00.

You shoul know that I really look forward to whatever PL work I can do on this book. Your voice was clear and the pace was great (and the book sounds like it will a fun ride!).

There are a few things that will need to be fixed in Section 00, though, and two things that will need to be fixed in all the sections (provided that you followed the same pattern--I haven't listened to them all).

For all the sections, the intro (and maybe outro) will need some work.
  • 1. It's pretty important to include the "Chapter xx" at the beginning of each intro so that the reader can have a sense of where they are in the book right from the beginning of the intro. That way, if they need to skip to the next chapter (or several chapters down the line), they don't have to listen to the whole intro to figure out where they are!
    2. Also, you should only include your name in either the intro or the outro. Since you give more information in the outro (location, date, etc.), I suggest leaving it there and just editing it out of the intros.
    3. If you don't include the "End of Chapter xx" in each outro, that will need to be added.
If you want, you can wait to make these edits until the rest of the PL for each chapter is done so you hopefully only have to reupload each section once. Alternatively, you can make them all now--just post here if you're going to do that so PLs know to wait for the new recordings.

For Section 00, there are three things that need to be fixed.
  • 1. For the intro, I know it doesn't really make sense to say "Section 00" or something like that. I asked another (more vastly experienced) PL for a suggestion on this, and she suggested the following for the intro: " "Introduction to A Town is Drowning. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit librivox.org. A Town is Drowning by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth." Then you would just start reading the dust jacket: "TORN FROM TODAY'S HEADLINES..."
    2. At 1:27, you insert some very interesting commentary on the text. This would be perfect in the written summary. Unfortunately, LibriVox doesn't allow for additions to the text in the spoken word. Please remove that portion (and please put it into the summary--it really is insightful and would prompt me to read the book even more than the dust jacket summary).
    3. For the outro, please add "End of Introduction." at 2:29.
Just a reminder--these edits are easier to make if you edit backward (from the end of the file to the beginning) so that the time stamps stay accurate. This section isn't long enough to make it difficult if you do it the other way around, but some of the longer chapters may be more difficult.

Please ask if you have questions. Remember, I'm new to being a prooflistener, so I am learning as we go!

Thank you,
Stephanie
