Do you remember "Madame de Stael" from so long ago?

My best,

PL OK!

I certainly do remember her (and she crops up everywhere). I thought I'd reviewed that book for Goodreads, but apparently not.

I enjoyed this section. I've always been a bit of a fan of Joseph II (from a superficial acquaintance with him). On the whole, the Hapsburgs do seem brainier than the Bourbons and a lot brainier than the Hanoverians. Yes, I'm a snob.

Best,

Barbara

Thank you, Barbara!

Joseph II was an interesting, well-intentioned, frustrated guy.

Not quite.

Sad.

At 5:54 there is a line of p257 missing:

"Marie-Antoinette received message after message from Vienna"
