https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bluereview3_09_various_128kbps.mp3 - 13:11 Ready for PL!

No worries about the mono/stereo - all sorts of things happen when you open these files :D

I see that there is a book in progress on LV by Yone Noguchi. He seems to have written quite a few books in lot in English. This book of haikus looks quite interesting - https://archive.org/details/japanesehokkus01nogu/page/n5/mode/2up

Section 9 is PL OK.

Sometimes these things happen, and at least this one got fixed without any rerecording! But I always hope there's something to be learned from it that can come in useful in the future. You know, 'o, I've come across that before and this is how to remedy it', rather than 'crikey, the machines are doing something unexpected'.

I just read the first couple and Noguchi's haikus look very cool. But a quick flip ahead suggests that some of the pages haven't scanned properly, so perhaps if a different scan would be better for reading.

Chapter 5 corrected and ready for spot PL!

Last word on Kamakura... It looks I don't remember the great buddha because I went to a different temple. There are so many beautiful temples in Japan, its an easy mistake to make :) A few hydrangea pics here: https://www.kanpai-japan.com/kamakura/meigetsu-in

I can't see another copy of the haiku book, but as I like reading books about places I have visited, I am adding this one to the list: https://archive.org/details/kamakura00noguuoft/page/n7/mode/2up

Just want to let you know I'll be away from LV for a couple of weeks until end of year madness at work has died down.

Section 5 is spot PL OK.

The Library of Congress scan of Noguchi's haikus you found might have a few misses amongst the hits, but there's a Harvard scan that looks a bit more legible, based on very quick spot checks. If you're interested, that is! Some of them are really lovely.

Of course, reading the book about Kamakura would also be good. I'd be willing to PL, but I won't be able to offer much help on pronunciation...

Good luck with the big push to get to New Year's!

Thanks! That one didn't show up on my search. Did you notice it is dedicated to WB Yeats?

Happy Christmas to both of you! Hope you are enjoying it with family and friends! Unfortunately, we are in isolation until New Years Eve. Nobody very sick but we have to stay away from people for 10 days. But it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good - I should be able to get this one finished over the next few days :D

and the next batch:

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bluereview3_10_various_128kbps.mp3 - 6:39

I must say that having listened to Part 8 several times, I'm still not sure what he was reviewing. Was it a play or an opera? And who is Mr. Hoffmanstal? Whatever it was, he certainly didn't like it!

One note for the mysterious section 8:

5.00-5.07, bottom p 176, omission
...he probably does not see much difference between the fine poetry [and the mere bombast] that are both to be found in the serious scenes...

I think he was probably reviewing an opera. What I found was that the author of review
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Joseph_Dent
was later a prof at Cambridge as well as a critic. It looks like Hofmannsthal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_von_Hofmannsthal
was an Austrian librettist who adapted the Moliere play mentioned in the review, and that the opera Ariadne auf Naxos
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariadne_auf_Naxos
was composed by Strauss
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Strauss
and Hofmannsthal and was part and parcel of the play but in a kind of modern, new way that our reviewer found alienating. It also looks like Dent saw the earlier version and that there was a later version - no idea what he'd make of that! This has been a bit of a rabbit hole because I don't know anything about critical debates in musical history of the time.

Are you aware of the new BBC radio drama of The Princess Bride? I haven't started listening, but my willpower is giving out.

And one more... don't try to keep up - we will be released into the outside world on Friday at 2.00 pm, and I am trying to finish by then!

A note on this one for pronunciation of Mr. Cornelius Weygandt - I have gone for 'Weegandt'. It seems a bit strange, but he was American and this is the Americanised pronunciation I've found for others with the same name.

Thanks for tracking down those links - so it looks like it was the Moliere play, with incidental music by Strauss, followed by the 30-minute version of the opera. I think Mr Dent was too busy being clever to explain!

From the Wikipedia on Ariadne auf Naxos: 'In London the early version was given eight times at His Majesty's Theatre beginning on 27 May 1913. The Hofmannsthal adaptation of Molière's play was presented in an English translation by W. Somerset Maugham under the title The Perfect Gentleman. The opera was sung in German with Eva von der Osten, Hermine Bosetti and Otakar Marák, conducted by Thomas Beecham. The reviewer in The Musical Times found the incidental music for the play to be more attractive than that for the opera, which nevertheless had "many strong emotional appeals." However, the orchestration of the opera was thought to be "peculiar", and in the finale, the love-making of Bacchus and Ariadne, tedious.'

Thanks for the Princess Bride link - my wife will be excited, she's a big fan!

Section 7 is PL OK!

I'm going to have to try to download section 12 another day. I've gone away and come back later, cleared my browsing history and scowled at it, but it's still not letting me download the file. It's saying it's a web page rather than an mp3 (?), which doesn't make any sense.

I hope you (all of you!) enjoy the Princess Bride! I thought you'd mentioned it before, but I wasn't sure who in the family was the big fan. The BBC usually have really top-notch dramas at this time of year, and this one looks to be no exception.

Section 10 is PL OK.

For section 11, one note, maybe two:

0.19, p 189 subsection number (I) omitted

11.17-11.25, p 193 last para
Here, however, in “Isle of Thorns” and “Sons and Lovers” are two books, courageous, honest, adventurous.
Could you check the Lawrence title? I think I’m hearing Sons of Lovers.

Corrections to Parts 8 and 11 uploaded!

For part 12, I htink I must have made a mistake with the filename, try this...

The Princess Bride was fun, eagerly awaiting Part 2! I also enjoyed the back story on 'the book'.
