Section 18 PL okay.

Their history of prostitution is obviously coloured by the authors' societal and religious outlooks, but it's good to see them trying to be balanced and objective.

EDIT: Sections 19 and 20 PL okay.

Thanks.

There's a real concern for their situation. I'm expecting the C19 sections to be harrowing...

PL notes for Section 21

14.39 "... which they resumed whenever they abandoned that mode of life." I hear "assumed" instead of "resumed". Line minus 21, col 1, pdf page 101

19.42 "... if her husband endeavoured to tempt her into such adultery." Read "encouraged" instead of "endeavoured". Half way down para 1, col 1, pdf page 102

19.52 "On the other hand, if a woman committed the crime ..." Read "continued" instead of "committed". (In the sentence following the one with the previous slip-up.)

22.51 "... as to whence the prostitutes came, seeing that they were chiefly strangers." I hear "when" instead of "whence" (but I'm not certain of this). First sentence, second para, col 2, pdf page 102

23.30 "... Palatine Hill, to please the bestial senses of Elagabalus." "Scenes" read instead of "senses". Line 15, col 2, pdf page 102

An enormous amount of literary research has gone into this work.

Peter.

Thanks, Peter.
Word blindness is a weird phenomenon!

Edited Section 21 (33:12)

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/londonlabour4_021_mayhew_128kb.mp3

14.39 "... which they RESUMED whenever they abandoned that mode of life." Line minus 21, col 1, pdf page 101

19.42 "... if her husband ENDEAVOURED to tempt her into such adultery."Half way down para 1, col 1, pdf page 102

19.52 "On the other hand, if a woman COMMITTED the crime ..." (In the sentence following the one with the previous slip-up.)

23.30 "... Palatine Hill, to please the bestial SENSES of Elagabalus." Line 15, col 2, pdf page 102

However, I haven't changed 22.51 "... as to whence the prostitutes came, seeing that they were chiefly strangers." as I can hear the whence.

I've just noticed that there's a 0 at the end of the file name for Section 23, so I've re-uploaded the file correctly named. I don't think it needs to be re -PL'd.

Section 24 PL ok. Unpleasant.

With regard to my previous quote about the condition of women, it came to me later that I wondered what the author's attitude to the movement for women's suffrage would have been.

Section 25 (39:16)

Prostitutes Part 9
AMONG THE BARBAROUS NATIONS Part 3
from page 61 "In the kingdom of Dahomey, on the Guinea Coast, ..." to page 67.

(Section 26 to start "Women in Australia".)

Yes, I wonder. he's certainly against the (near-) slave status of women to their 'significant other' or owner.
