I am wondering though how much of the views on the culture of the Aborigines is clouded by Western views of the time. In particular the part about the subservience and beating of the women. In a hunter-gatherer society it doesn't seem to make sense to have half of the population - who's equally responsible for the survival of the group - completely oppressed.

Eerlijk gezegd vind ik het soms wel beschamend wat er staat. Speciaal als hij het heeft over de Australische aboriginals...

PL OK!

It is hard to listen to at times, the shooting animals for sport, but especially the Scottish guy with his ape-references.

But at the same time I feel that Verne himself has a view of "what on Earth were they thinking" when he talks about the English and their treatment of the aborigines, not just here but in other countries as well. He seems to be quite shocked by this. He never made it down under himself though, did he?

Having not read the Dutch or the French version but based on the English translation, his knowledge of Australia was rather rudimentary, but you have to remember that Darwin was very much in the news at the time so seeing them as the "first descendant of the apes" was to be expected when 2 races who had completely different ideas of property met with the usual results.
