Christmas Under Three Flags by Mary Emily Donelson Wilcox (1829 - 1905).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog here: https://librivox.org/christmas-under-three-flags-by-mary-emily-donelson-wilcox/

Quote:
This work details personal memories of Mary Emily Donelson Wilcox, adopted granddaughter (actually grand niece) of Rachel Donelson Jackson, wife of President Andrew Jackson, and assumed to be the first baby born in the White House. The book focuses on three Christmas memories--the first of a Christmas in the White House in 1835 during Jackson's Presidency; the second, a Christmas in Prussia at the home of the Crown Prince in 1847, to which she was invited because her father was US minister to Berlin; the last story, a Christmas in Texas in the 1830s. Unlike the first two stories, the third one does not appear to be a personal memory, but a recounting of a story, which she suggests was told to her in the White House, but at least part of that story occurs after the 1835 Christmas when she relates that she heard the story. It was possibly told to her as she lived in Texas while her father served as US Commissioner to the Texas Republic or later when she lived there with her husband. ( Dr. P. Gould)

  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Great Mary Ann! I appreciate it. (I didn't want to post on the template--for obvious reasons--but this project is special to me. The author is a distant cousin of mine (not one whom I knew much about--other than her existence--before I was scanning the boards here at librivox--but I know a lot more about her now. Planning a special Christmas surprise for my grand nieces and grand nephews (2 girls ages 2 and 7; 3 boys ages 4, 6, and 10).

Many, many thanks!

Philip

Ok--sounds great. I'm just coming off some vocal issues so it will probably be a couple of weeks or so before I have a section done....but once I get going, my goal is to do about one a week (and I've left plenty of time in case the vocal issues recur.)

Thanks for setting up the MW--I'll get it filled in. (I generally go ahead and post word counts--even in my solo projects to give the MC and the DPL an idea of the work flow).

I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Philip

The entertainment was certainly different then--and NO Christmas trees. (I have taught US History a good bit although Russian History (1613-1923) is my specialty.) It is possible (I don't know for certain) that Mrs. Wilcox's family was instrumental in bringing the Christmas tree tradition to the US--they were certainly in a position to do so.

I realize I probably shouldn't be blathering on...but...an interesting part of her narrative was her acknowledgment of Jackson's public persona as possessed of a vicious temper and acknowledged some of his most virulent political enemies. (At the same time, the reason Jackson had respiratory problems and slept on all those pillows was that there was a bullet lodged in his chest from a duel in which he had killed his opponent (in this particular duel--he was the challenged party). Enough history lecture.

I'll have Section 2 up in a few days. Many thanks for your PL.

Philip

Mary Ann:

The third and final installment has been posted to the MW. (I think it's my favorite of the three--but I'm not now--nor ever have been a romantic.)

Many thanks,

Philip

Philip,

On section 2, would you check at 12.22? "Happy innocent girlhood" is repeated. Otherwise it is another great reading!

Thanks so much for your PL, Mary Ann! Corrections have been posted. (Could not get my tongue around that phrase when I recorded it--had to repeat it a bunch of times. Think I have it back to just one now!)

Terrific! Mary Ann, you know this project is special to me and I cannot thank you enough for guiding me through it! (I don't know if you are aware--because I didn't want it to impact your PL-ing--but I am currently on complete vocal rest as in no talking at all. The only exceptions were to finish up my reading commitments here at Librivox. I have one section left in another project that is awaiting PL and then my voice will no longer be heard until at least Sep 15. Severe tonsillitis caused an inflamed larynx which has stubbornly refused to heal.)

I still check in here every day, and I enjoy listening to others' reading, but I miss reading myself. However the quieter I am now, the sooner I can let my voice be heard again.

Thanks so much.

Philip :9:

BTW--my mother is a rabid Cardinal's fan, but my allegiance is to my home-area team the SF Giants who are having a pitiful year. The Cubs and Cards should make the Central Div interesting this year (my money's on the Cubs--they have better front office people and a better field manager than the Cards--they have made better strategic decisions the last couple of years and it has paid off.) Be interesting to see the finish.

Philip,

I did not realize that you are on vocal rest. Hope this project wasn't too much. It is a lovely set of stories. I did like the last one the best of all.

I grew up a Cardinals fan also, well, actually, I started as a fan of the Big Red Machine and then moved to the Cardinals later in life. But after being in Chicago for 25 years, and having the privilege of going to Wrigley a number of times, I do find myself rooting for them, as well as for the White Sox. The division is turning out to be pretty interesting and close! Keeps us on our toes!

Pleasure working with you on this.

MaryAnn
