Jacques le fataliste et son maître aka Jacques the Fatalist and his Master is an amusing book of famous provenance.
The public domain translation I found, James the Fatalist and his Master, is from 1797, but still reads pretty smoothly to the modern reader. Also, it seems to be presented in a script-like format, so maybe it's a good candidate for a dramatic reading.
