I ran across this title this morning, in an essay I'm recording on the American novel. Apparently it's a novel appealing to high school teenagers in the 1800's, for being not overly virtuous, thus daring. I haven't read it, but the author is not yet represented in our catalog. Somebody might be interested in putting up this project. Here's a quote from the F. M. Crawford essay:
Every boy wants to read “Guy Livingstone,” and most boys do, with or without their mamma’s permission, at a very early age. If we advanced so far as the French realistic point of view, that book would become a common property of boys and girls, and perhaps “Nana,” or “Les Mensonges,” would take its place in the estimation of our children,—a consummation devoutly to be prayed against.
