As to the motive which has prompted the preparation of this edition of Montesquieu's Considerations on the Causes of the Grandeur and Decadence of the Romans, I will only say, that it having occurred to me that the place occupied in American thought by this celebrated work was by no means proportionate to its merits, the idea thence presented itseK of bringing it forward in a new translation — associating the text with such Notes as might serve not only to place the original work in proper relation to the present status of critical history, but serve withal — in an incidental manner — to place the spirit of Roman history, and of ancient history in general, in proper comparison with the spirit of modem times.
