Just gotta put in my vote of support for this being recorded in whatever manner. It'll be a heck of an undertaking, but I consider this to be the greatest story ever told. Definitely worth having in the catalog!

Back in my active reader days, I was actually waiting desperately for the year this would be available. Now I'm too doggone intimidated by the project to do it myself  But I'll be happy to read a bit if it ends up as a group project.

If there's still any interest in this project, we now have PD copies of Volume 1 and 2 available to us now:

If anyone wants to run with this massive compendium I'd be happy to DPL it solo or group. I did some Mandarin Chinese at school and University and the Chinese Pinyin, after skimming through, is simple enough to me; I would not strictly DPL it but if someone wanted to say it as a Chinese person probably would then I could record words. I am not a native speaker obviously. I couldn't do it as well as one but I would get it right 90 percent of the time. In the other 10 percent it would still be OK enough.

I better explain that. Pinyin is the system of putting Chinese characters into words like 毛泽东 becomes Mao Zedong. There were some competing systems such as Wage Giles that were abandoned. There are five tones in the Pinyin. I wouldn't expect people to say the tones. Again if someone wanted me to record tones I could even say the fifth one; I know how to say it because I was a nerd at school and found out lol.

For instance Luo Guanzhong [ignore tones for now] would be said like "Law Gwarnjong".
I am not so rusty after so many years; I checked it with a proper pronunciation site and that is basically right  I can at least guarantee saying the author correctly :)

Actually the above crude explanation isn't that facetious; there was a trend in the early 90s of books for the American traveler: learn Mandarin in 2 weeks and be the traveler you were born to be! They threw grammar out the window and wrote every Chinese word as phonetics as it is said. They would have written Hanyu as harn yoo. The running joke was that this was the Yale academia system
Anyway when I was much younger I showed my Chinese teacher one of those books and he said "No, No, No! Bad!" almost like Mr Miyagi saying "No, Daniel Son. You must paint fence. No easy way. We still have deal?"

Anyway that was a tangent. I could DPL this if it got moving along. It is a classic that should be done.

It is still fine for PD that it was published in 1925 BUT the publisher's note by Kelly and Walsh Ltd is dated November 1929? That makes it a 1929 edition? :help: :hmm:
At least I can download it. Sometimes the barriers to the Antipodean state are...maddening. But here it's inner peace. :9:

I'm not sure, but I see that the text is the same with the 1925 edition used at Distributed Proofreaders, so it looks like it's a facsimile.

PS. Oh! It says "Copyright 1925" on that second page, so yes it's fine
