Another book that is now in the public domain is A Mother's Recompense by Edith Wharton.
Kate eloped with her lover twenty years before, leaving her husband and young daughter behind. Now her daughter asks her to live with her before her wedding. The bridegroom: the only man Kate ever truly loved. Fascinating and perceptive book. Here is a link to the etext:
