I was searching for some other books and I came across a list of Newbery Honor books.Theses were books that were runner ups to the Newbery Medal. I found the texts for the ones that are obviously PD and not in our catalog.

I am not familiar with any of these books, but I thought they might be of interest.

These are from the 1922 medal year. (There were no Honor books in 1923)

Cedric the Forester by Bernard Gay Marshall: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37102 - ADOPTED
The Great Quest by Charles Boardman Hawes: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/40265
The Old Tobacco Shop by William Bowen: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/26977
Done https://librivox.org/the-old-tobacco-shop-by-william-bowen/

From 1925 Medal Year:
Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39076002266109&view=1up&seq=9 - ADOPTED

Hi, Maria! I am a Newbery mega-LOVER! I own almost every single one of them in hard copy, lacking only about 3 that have me periodically combing through rare books sales, hoping to find ones that I can afford to fill my gaps with.

I'm trying to get a project started on The Dream Coach, which has a 1924 publish date, but the copyright was allowed to expire, putting it in the public domain already. It's not yet on Gutenberg Project, though. I think that's why I'm having a hard time getting an MC to pick it up?

So I decided I'd love to read Cedric the Forester while I wait for that project to be picked up. I've got a request posted in the New Launch Pad, and hopefully it'll get an MC. Once these two projects are squared away, I plan to hit The Great Quest and then The Old Tobacco Shop, if somebody else hasn't put them in. By then, Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story and Tales of Silver Lands ought to be up for public domain. :)

I've added one of the 1925 Honor Books (published in 1924). The other one for that year has already been recorded.

Wheee! Yes! :) Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas is the next solo project I'll be starting.

Looking forward to it - I have the first edition in hard copy on my shelf, taunting me to hurry and finish my current works so it can be started.

And Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story is now an active dramatic reading project. It will be adorable.

Hey, Maria,

I found it strange that searching in the LibriVox Catalog for "Newbery" yields 0 results.

We have most of the PD Newberies recorded, and at least two are currently in progress. Several of the published audiobooks even include "Newbery" in their summaries.

Can we get a Group set up in the Catalog for them? Similar to the way collections and authors list all the relevant books? Homeschoolers and children's literature aficionados would appreciate such a listing.

I've gathered all the Newbery Medal and Honor book information for the PD years and the links for the ones we already have in LibriVox:

Two come up in a keyword search for Newbery. Apparently the others don't have that as a keyword. We can make a group for these, but it will take a little time to look them all up to get the project numbers which is how books get added to a group. Certainly doable and I agree it's a good suggestion. :)

I think it's Newbery, not Newberry. That is also a problem when searching for it. ;)

Edit to add: One thing I don't like about groups is how our search returns them. Put in "anne of green gables" and see how it returns the results.

Is finding the project numbers something I can do, Jo? Or does it need MC access?

If you hover your mouse over the itunes or RSS button on the catalog page, it's the number at the very end of the link.

For example
https://librivox.org/the-story-of-mankind-by-hendrik-van-loon/ is project # 2418

Yes, I searched it correctly, just mistyped it in my post (which I have now corrected). Personally, I don't have a problem with the groups.

OK, I put the project numbers in front of each title. I'm pretty sure I chose the correct number for the Shen of the Sea current project - it has some extra numbers at the end of its URL.

That's a good point about the Newberry typo/error that a lot of people make. Is there a way to point both search terms to the group?

And how dorky is it that it took me forever to figure out how the heck to search the catalog by keywords? I had always assumed keywords would trigger a find in the main search box. It was pathetic, how long it took my brain to process that there's a little link right under the search box to do advanced searching. . . (at myself)

You are far from the only one to not notice that link to the Advanced Search. :)

I've created the group, but it may not show in the catalog until the cache refreshes which at this point may will be Friday midnight PST.

As far as the Newbery/Newberry thing, unless I add the misspelling to the name of the group (which I don't plan to do), that is going to be tough. It could be added as a keyword to the individual books, but that will only help if people do a keyword search.

For in progress projects, the project number is the number at the end of the BC Admin link under the MW. When new books in this category are posted, the MC will need to add the project number to the group by hand.
