Pope St. Gregory I (540-604) wrote the Pastoral Rule (also called Pastoral Care because of the first sentence of the book) in the sixth century. It was distributed to all bishops under his see, and it was one of the books St. Augustine of Canterbury brought to the British Isles on his mission in 597. For these reasons, it has particular importance for Roman Catholics, Anglicans/Episcopalians, and various Orthodox traditions.

The book may be found in the public domain as a chapter in the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers Series 2, volume 12: http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf212
