Ta-Da! Thanks to Ann and ChuckW, I have a downloaded PDF which I've checked and corrected the sideways-ness, and reuploaded to Archive. It isn't Gutenberg Project approved yet (we're in process for that too) but in the meantime I think this source (which includes scans of the front page and publication data showing 1923) should be enough for a Librivox Project source!

So it all has to be downloaded to read? Or am I being impatient and Archive is still working on it?

Archive might still be deriving it. I went ahead and downloaded it, but I'm having some issues with it still. For one thing, there seems to be an extraneous blank page inserted between every other page. Every odd numbered page for me is blank, while the evens are actually the pages of the scan.

What's more problematic, for me at least, is the fact that I don't have or know of any (free) programs that can read the text off of this and let me paste it into an editable document. That's what I'd need in order to create a DR script. I could use the text-only file that Hathi has on their site if I had to. I'd have to copy and paste it page by page, rather than being able to easily lift text from a whole chapter in one go, but it's doable. It just means that it would take longer to make the script than it normally would.

I'm pretty sure it's still deriving on Archive - that's what my message says.

Yes, I don't know why every second page is blank - I can't delete those pages either! That's how the PDF came to me.

Devorah, don't try to make scripts off this! I'm in the process of submitting this text to Project Gutenberg to be converted into proper text and cleared by them. (That only took two weeks for Cowardly Lion!) That's the reason I uploaded to Archive, so that I could share the link. I figure the other Doctor Dolittle book isn't finished yet, so there's no rush.

Ok, good. I was thinking that was part of the master plan. Just to see how it would go, I did make a script for the Prologue and chapter 1. I tried to time myself, but did a lousy job of it, because I didn't take note of when I started. But I think doing this much from the plain text at Hathi took me about a half hour.

Not horribly onerous, but what with fixing the formatting and the occasional badly scanned word or two, this would get tedious quickly.

Hurray! I should get caught up with editing Voyages, so that I can start on scripts for this.

Have fun with it. If you run into anything that doesn't look right, let me know.

Yay! Thanks Greg! I'll have a look at the text too - maybe for scripts or maybe for a solo! This is a fabulous book that I remember very fondly from my childhood!
