I recently read a section of the World's Story volume currently in progress (Volume 4 - Greece and Rome)* called "In the Temple of Aphrodite" by Ernst Eckstein -- it seemed to pick up and leave off in the middle of a longer story, which made me curious and I poked around a bit.

Sure enough, it appears to be an excerpt from a novel by Eckstein, published in English in 1886. The bit I read for the World's Story volume was intriguing enough that I thought there might be some interest in the full book, so here it is:
