One of the most popular novels of the 19th century, second only to Uncle Tom's Cabin. A central text of the temperance movement. And more importantly, the book where a character barks out, "No; and if he'll just keep away from here, he may go to—on a hard-trotting horse and a porcupine saddle as fast as he pleases."
