This forum is for people to suggest books that they'd like to be recorded, or that they think others might want to record. Some posts are made by someone who might want to coordinate the work, to gauge interest. Most, however, are simply suggestions or requests that the original poster is not planning on recording or coordinating themself.

LibriVox is your project, and we will accept any book in the Public Domain, preferably from the Project Gutenberg Catalog of books. We're happy to have recordings in any language (see also the language and copyright sections in the FAQ!)

For a complete list of books in progress and those completed and ready for downloading, please see the LibriVox Catalog.

Below, you will find notes on: Click on each of these topics to jump directly to the relevant section, or just scroll down.

How to suggest a book
  • If you would like to suggest a book, please first check in the Non-Public Domain Suggestions sticky to see if it has been suggested before, and the copyright queried.
Then post a new topic here, with subject header: Book-title, by Author-name
  • If you have many books to suggest, choose the two (or maybe three) you would most like to do, and post them.
  • Putting a link to an online version of the text helps other people who can go and see if it might interest them.
  • Say something about why this would be a good book to record.
  • If you wish to begin a project yourself, and you have a little bit of experience with how LibriVox works, feel free to do so. If you want others to read chapters, too, please read below on how to become a book coordinator. Otherwise, please post in the Launch Pad (read the sticky post there first). See also the last section in this Sticky for how the recording process works. LibriVox accepts multiple recordings, so even if something has been done before, if you'd like to do it again, please don't hold back!

How to coordinate suggested books

Anyone can coordinate the books suggested here. The person suggesting the book may or may not want to BC themselves - some people post suggestions to gauge interest for a collaboration, but others suggest books they'd like to read or listen to, but not coordinate.

If in doubt, post to ask the original suggester whether they intended BCing.

However, we welcome multiple versions of books, so it's no problem if two people decide to do the same book (e.g. one as a collaboration, one as a solo).

Please make sure you've read the How to Become a Book Coordinator page on the LibriVox wiki, which is regularly updated.

What happened to a thread I saw here and which has disappeared?

Unless you were hallucinating, it's most likely that the thread was moved to another forum by an administrator. This can happen for two reasons:

- It was started here but is really much more appropriate in another place
- As part of the LibriVox recording 'work flow' [*] it progressed to another part of the process and was thus better placed further down the chain.

[*] See an explanation of this 'work flow' below!

The LibriVox Recording Process

Usually, the process works like this:
1) A book or shorter work is recommended in the Book Suggestions forum. From there, two things can happen:
a) It is taken up as a solo project and posted by the soloist in the Launch Pad forum
b) It is made into a collaborative group project, with several readers reading parts of the text. In this case, someone volunteers to become a Book Coordinator, and posts in the Launch Pad forum.

2) Once someone agrees to read the book,
a) if it's a solo project, it moves to Going Solo, where the reader occasionally posts progress reports and receives encouragement from wannabe listeners, until the reading is recorded
b) if it's a group project, it's moved to Readers Wanted. The Book Coordinator liaises with volunteer readers, who 'claim' parts of the work and post the completed readings ready for proof-listening. Once all chapters have been claimed, the project is moved to the Readers Found forum.

3) When the recordings are done and have been proof-listened, the project's Meta-Coordinator will catalogue the book, sending the files to archive.org, where they are available to the general listening public.

Useful resource pages in our Wiki
  • Online Public Domain Book Resources -- all collaboratives need an online text to refer to ... and it's helpful for the proof-listeners of solos to have a text available too. We can accept books read from paper, but need evidence of Public Domain (a photo/scan of the copyright page, showing a printing date more than 95 years ago, for example.)
