I have two book suggestions

1. Frank Harris "Contemporary portraits" in 2 volumes, short biographical descriptions of the people who were so unfortunate to meet Harris. He describes Marx and Herbert Spencer as idiots, Thomas Carlyle as gay and much more. Great victorian fun. Many short texts, so the project can be done in stages

2. Short stories by Marquis de sade. There aren't many text with a little attitude here, and de sades short stories should be nice. These are also short texts that can be done in stages.

For the de Sade in English , we'd need the translation to be PD - published 1922 or earlier , which may cause problems :(

Our objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet. - Hugh McGuire.

The contemporary portraits could make a good group project. They boast, among other things, the origin of the famous Monty Python sketch -
Wilde: I wish I'd said that.
Whistler: You will, Oscar, you will.
The de Sade on the other hand was translated in the Sixties.
