this is a strange book. at the center are the friends vere gordon and richard clifford, who are attending a house party on the american east coast. there are also a number of ladies present. the "uncultured philadelphian" edna forrest, the new york belle miss cora taunton, and a houseful of other ladies and gentlemen. but the situation of who is in love with whom is not entirely clear, which is quite a difficulty in 1880s america, particularly for young men who do not have millions of dollars in the bank. and then on a walk, gordon and clifford see an ominous figure of a crouching woman...
