The King's daughters, or, The heiress and the outcast
by Hoffman, Mary Jane; Munro, Norman L., pbl

interesting stuff. this is the story of kingdon catheron and his wife, and of mark talford and his wife, and their kids. catheron is an industry magnate who owns coal mines, and his wife inez is the good spirit of the miners, taking care of the improvements to their cottages and stuff. and then one day there is a strike, and in the midst of the difficulties, kingdon is held up in the street and beat unconscious by a number of men, the only one he can certainly identify being mark talford. tragedy ensues. but beautifully written.
