The blue ribbon
by Tabor, Eliza

this is an interesting book. we are again in a small english village, and the richest man in this village is mr armstrong. he has accumulated a large fortune by hard work and clever investments, but he is now a bachelor of 65 and can afford some leisure, so he is doing charity in a small way. in the first place, he gave a place in his household to a woman, patch, an italian singer who lost her voice and lived on the street. as the story opens, he decides to do a good turn to another neighbor. and those events set in motion a series of events tha happen in this town.

this is quite well-written, with interesting characterisations and dialogue.
