Hilt to hilt: or, Days and nights on the banks of the Shenandoah in the autumn of 1864; from the mss. of Colonel Surry of Eagle's Nest
by Cooke, John Esten, 1830-1886; Wilmer, Richard Hooker, 1918-, former owner

i guess the civil war context is
October 9 – American Civil War – Battle of Tom's Brook: Union cavalrymen in the Shenandoah Valley defeat Confederate forces at Tom's Brook, Virginia.

the book is written very engagingly, as if the author is really talking to the reader, which makes it a nice memoir to read.
