The master spirit
by Magnay, William

interesting stuff. we are in london high society sometime just after the turn of the century. we have a rising star on the political stage who is backed up by a dubious genius, we have an old murder case in which more evidence comes to light, and we have ongoing scandals of all descriptions. so this is a murder mystery and political conspiracy, which i think a lot of our readers would enjoy :)

A Poached Peerage by Sir William Magnay

this is fun, with an interesting set of characters. mr popkiss, distracted by having to watch his daughter and her admirers (making sure they dont climb into her window) receives a note that scotland yard is looking for someone who is on his way to the popkiss inn. just then the colonel and his two daughters arrive, letting him know that the newly succeeded lord quorn has arrived from australia and will be entertained in the quorn family home, which the colonel has been renting until now. perhaps he will be got to marry one of the colonels daughters (one of them already tricked a drunk man into proposing to her). but who exactly is the new lord quorn? :)

The Hunt Ball Mystery by Sir William Magnay
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10029

gifford and kelson are on their way into the country side when two desasters occur to them> first, kelson finds out his suitcase was not unloaded from the train and is on its way to the next station, which is terrible as they have made the journey to attend a ball which is naturally impossible without proper evening dress. and secondly, they find out that a stranger is insisting on sharing their carriage. they have bespoke a hotel carriage, and the stranger is not going to get out so they are forced into companionship for the journey of a mile.

the ball is a peculiar affair, as it is given by the people who bought the old family estate of the giffords. but not only the ladies attending this ball divert the two gentlemen, but especially the discovery of a large bloodstain.
