Wife or slave, by J.A. St. John Blythe
by Sophie Frances F . Veitch

1873 book by sff veitch, i think the title pretty much says it all. ida and constance monck are young ladies of marriageable age and in high demand. but making a splendid match in your first season might not be the only thing in the mind of a young lady, even at that point in history.

Wise as a serpent
by Veitch, Sophie F. F. (Sophie Frances Fane)

this is a 1869 romance with some very very clever observations on persons and society. i really liked the style of the author. any fan of trollope and collins might want to look into this more closely.

Monksford, by the author of 'Wise as a serpent'.
by Sophie Frances F . Veitch

more interesting stuff. this is "a tale of much talking" which only sounds boring if you didnt read the talk, which is actually very clever dialogue. It is reminding me a lot of cranford, check it out.

A lonely life, by the author of 'Wise as a serpent'.
by Sophie Frances F . Veitch

interesting stuff. we meet harold seton as a young man, seeking council from a monk about how he should continue his life in the face of difficulties. ultimately, he chooses for the church, abandoning his hopes of a family, and choosing loneliness. but how did we get there, what secret lies at the bottom of it all?
